About lame excuse why email push in smartphone sucks and Blackberry rocks

If you´re building a device that runs on a GSM or CDMA network you only have one way to get data to the device out of band without it being connected to a server, and that´s SMS. This is independent of whether the device is designed for a US or European market: if you´re on GSM or CDMA, there´s no special out-of-band channel on the network for tapping devices on the shoulder to say "hey, dude, you´ve got mail". The cellular networks simply don´t have that type of capability built into the infrastructure.
