So Microsofts solution is actually nothing more than your device polling Exchange server 2003 requesting syncing. If I was sold this solution as Direct Push technology to actually find it that it was infact a pull technology that was polling my server I would fell that I was misled. Just as I fell I was misled that I was getting bluetooth on my smartphone when I cannot connect to anyother mobile device through bluetooth.
The myth that the Microsoft solution is cheaper is also extremely vague. As of yet I have yet to see them produce any costing comparison even with the most expensive solution from RIM. They fail to tell you that the RIM blackberry solution actually is a complete out of the box solution, Microsofts is not. RIM provide mobiles devices, sim cards with unlimited data and even free voice calls and sms's. It provides updated hardware, remember microsoft devices such as the sp5 cost over 300 pounds sterling, PDAs such as the jasjar over 500 pounds sterling. Since smartphone has been released there has been more than one OS update per year with most devices not being upgradable, its not in the operators or device manufacturers interests to do so. When you compare device costs and data transmissions cost the microsoft solution does not look so cheap after all. RIM have targeted systems where live or real time email to mobile devices are critical, for instance for system administrators in a bank. Only true push email systems are acceptable for this type of requirement. RIM are probably more worried about the 450 million they have to pay to NTP for patent infringments than Microsofts solution.
Recently Vodafone decided to go with the Visto solution and I heard that Microsoft tried to win that contract. So why did they fail. Well Vistas solution is mobile device independant and only includes required software. All 2.5G and 3G sold by Vodaphone can make use of this solution. So as a package a company can goto Vodafone get a complete one stop solution, from devices of their choice, to a service plan of there choice, to a true push email solution than supports multiple cross platform email solutions.

Microsofts attempt to almost rebrand the definition of push email which even this site believe was true push email for a long time shows how marketing orientated it is while delivering solutions which I feel should be better. While AUTDv2 is a step inthe right direction it should have been more and we will wait for v3. |
