T-Mobile MDA Pro is a 3G Pocket PC phone known also as "HTC Universal". What's new in the new upgrade? Here is the list:

|

I do not have this T-Mobile MDA but a Qtek 9000 without operator lock.
My firmware version is 1.13.73 GER (dated 10/14/05), Radio: 1.03.00, ExtROM 1.13.63 GER.
How are these firmware upgrades designed ?
Is there a stream issued by HTC to each operator (or major distributor) for individual modification (i.e. operator dependent software gimmicks, operator lock etc.) ?
If so the main feature changes should be the same everywhere and also be compared checking the firmware release number.
Is this assumption correct ?
Or are firmware updates triggered and requested by the operators themselves ?
What's the policy in use ? |

Microsoft delivers Windows Mobile 5.0 to operators (like T-Mobile), distributors (like Qtek) and to manufacturers (like HTC). The radio part must be tested by manfucturer but other parts doesn't have to be tested by manufacturer. In other words: there is no guarantee that all owners of HTC Universal will get the same feature changes. Usually people go to :

... and pick one of many ROM upgrades for the same model or cook their own ROMs. Please go there to find which ROM would be the most suitable for you but remember that if you burn T-Mobile ROM into Qtek phone - you may lose warranty and you may encounter some unexpected problems... |

Does it worry anyone else that so many WM5.0 devices are getting ROM updates now?
I don't mind ROM updates by themselves, but if Push Email (AKU 2.0) was just around the corner surrely they would just wait. This says to me that Push Email is still a few months off at least! |
