If you had read the description text on this download, you would have noticed that the trial version of Visual Studio is NOT included in the download... only in the free DVD which you must order.
Certainly, this is because of the immense size of Visual Studio.
It is awefully judgmental of you to draw the conclusion that Microsoft does not want developers to write applications for Windows Mobile! There are many different groups at Microsoft, each of which often has interests that are in competition with each other. Despite this fact, they still manage to release a platform that immensly more programmable than Symbian or Nokia. I think you should _think_ for a minute before you throw around your inflamatory, sensationalistic screed. |

MSMobiles, you copied word for word the entire page, except for the one line which I quoted above. Then in your "news story" you add your own claim at the top of your story that the trial version of VS.NET 2005 is included. Did they ever teach you "reading and comprehension" in school? Or is this just one of your tabloid stories... twisting it around, ignoring facts, making up facts, etc. You have no journalistic integrity, and that is really pathetic.

of course I read it - but this description text was CHANGED LATER AND INFO THAT VISUAL STUDIO IS NOT INCLUDED WAS ADDED. Don't you understand that? |

look, the embedded Visual C++ was free in versions 3 and 4 and now with Visual Studio 5.0 the tools are not free. This is a drastic change and my point is that Microsoft should provide also some free tools for Windows Mobile 5.0 development... otherwise number of freeware and commercial software for Windows Mobile 5.0 will be simply smaller....
and these are facts : free-notfree - and not just marketing peptalk "we want developers". |

This is true. AFAIK, it's not even the Standard version(£99) that you need but the Professional (£450!) one to use the compact framework.
I'm a professional developer (well, it's been my job for the last 15 years  ) and I have used EVC quite a bit in the past. I don't make any money from mobile (or .net) so I'm not prepared to blow that much cash just to piss around with my phone and make fun little apps for my mates. I would pay £100, though.
This is just my personal position. I don't have a problem with MS charging what they want for their software. I'm not a freeloader. They and the world don't owe me anything. I just won't be buying this particular software. Whether my abstinance (and that of others like me) will be damaging long term is for them to decide. I doubt it will be.
When I considered my current job, I also considered a mobile job because I was comfortable developing for it. When I consider my next one, I won't consider mobile too seriously because I'm not familiar with it. I haven't read up on the WM5 API's too much because I know that I can't use them without shelling out a load of cash.
I think that the pricing more reflects the way that MS view Mobile now. I think that they see it as viable in the Corporate space and are persuing that revenue.
On a more positive note, let's not lose sight of the fact that the existing EVC's that are still free can be used to create great high performance applications for these devices but it's not as easy as with .net (I haven't done anything with it since getting my K-Jam).

The Windows Mobile 5.0 Developer Resource Kit DVD includes a 90-day trial of Visual Studio 2005 Professional. However, Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition *also* supports Windows Mobile application development:

According to this page, with the Standard Edition you can:
"Develop and deploy client-server based Windows, Web, SmartPhone, and Pocket PC applications."
So it looks like you're OK, as you said you'd be willing to spend £100 to pursue your hobby developing for mobile.

Thanks for the correction. I should have done my homework a bit better 
It looks to me like they have changed the products around a bit. I was previously looking at Visual C# .NET Standard 2003 and for that release, I believe you did need the £450 quid job.
Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition is actually a new product that isn't in stock at Amazon.co.uk yet and is due to cost £299.
Still a bit expensive for a hobby but it is better than £450. I'm pretty sure I paid £350 for VC6.0 back in the day but it was my main source of income then. It looks pretty good in comparison to that.
There's something pretty cool about mobile development in that you can show your mates what you've been doing when you're down at the pub.

Just noticed it's $262.99 on Amazon.com. That's a bit more like it. I'll probably pick it up if I can get it for that price in a couple of months as then I can have a good crack at C#. I didn't get the express version because it doesn't support XSL.
Still, there is a big difference in cost between $262.99 (assuming UK can get it at that price) and $0 and that could make all the difference for a lot of folk. |
