HTC Wizard has been sold by i-mate as i-mate JAM - with 802.11g activated - but mobile operators like T-Mobile, Orange, etc were selling it as T-Mobile MDA Vario, Orange SPV M2000, etc but with fast Wi-Fi deactivate...

If you read the specs carefully you'll see that supporting 802.11g is different of supporting 54mbps data transfers, the 802.11g on the wizard is limmited to 11mbps, BUT that's not allways bad because 802.11g supports OFDM which has better noise tollerance... But at lower rates, 9 and 6mbps only. At 11mbps, 5.5, 2 and 1 mbps you're using 802.11b..
And i don't know any hotspot that has disabled 802.11b, and all 802.11g APs support 802.11b.
Maybe there's a hack to enable the faster rates, but i can't find any use to them on a pocket pc. |

But I know of several such hotspots that accept only 802.11g ... |

Do you mean to say the HTC Wizard has been sold by i-mate as the i-mate™ KJAM ? |

... with original sources being mentioned (digitimes are bad because they in most cases don't mention the original sources of information) |

no, it has no Wi-Fi, and you can't enable it because it is not in hardware |
