Skype does not work on Microsoft smartphones either. Certainly not to any usuable level. However Skype PTT is a client available for Symbian which allows Skype calls even over a bluetooth connection.

Symbian however have several VoIP solutions out there.

Skype is not availble for Symbian currently due to the normally less processor speed. However skype are currently developing their own client for symbian especially due to the new Nokia E-seris phones.

Your article is missleading. It implies that symbian based phones cannot use skype when in fact they can. There are not only several Voip solutions for Symbian and MS Smartphone but there are several that are compatable with Skype including Skype PTT. Skype PTT I believe is also availble for MS Smartphone though I am currently unsure if there is a version yet availble for WM5.

However the symbian version not only works over wifi and 3g but also a bluetooth connection.

Skype are working on versions for Symbian and embedded linux phones according to Skype CEO Niklas Zennström.

Use of the skype network is availble to symbian based phones even more so than MS Smartphones.

It appears Skype PTT is "sharing" workload with PC: Skype PTT is a push to talk client for Skype to be used in conjunction with a Bluetooth enabled PC (the PC links to Skype, the phone is effectively used as a PTT headset). The obvious limitation is that you need to remain within Bluetooth distance of your PC.

Anyway, new CPUs used on Smartphones are getting more and more advanced, those 200MHz TI OMAP850 are supposed to be dualcore, yet I can't see any applications that are optimized to use the additional horsepower.
Same thing with wMMX, but it's a little better in that case (at lease TCPMP Player, former BetaPlayer, is optimized for wMMX and takes advantage of it).
If Skype requires 400MHz to be able to do simultaneous encoding/decoding of two audio channels, it would appear it's highly unoptimized piece of software.
What about those 3G phones that do audio/video encoding/decoding in realtime - do those have so much more powerfull hardware or dedicated chips on boards or are they just using hardware much more efficiently?

If you are in a bluetooth area next to a pc then skype ppt is a nice choice, however, imagine walking in a mall, having your ppc at hand, and making international calls using skype out and evdo...fantastic. Very Happy Shocked Laughing

Did anyone tried skype on treo 700w ? Rolling Eyes

Skype may not run on a mobile phone but you can still access Skype services from your phone

Have you tried WiSPA?

The current version allows you to:
call any contact on Skype or any telephone number through Skype Out from your mobile phone
listen to your Skype voice mails from your mobile phone
listen to your Outlook email from your mobile phone
receive your Skype calls to your mobile phone through Skype Call Forward, and
manage your Skype Call Forward settings to send calls to your mobile, to others or to voicemail as your circumstances change

all from your mobile phone

If you don't have a mobile, then configure a landline number through which to authorise you and use a standard landline and still get all the above features from that telephone.

WiSPA also allows you to raise alerts;
when you miss a call
when you receive an email
when you receive a voice mail
when you receive an IM

And like Skype Call Forward, WiSPA will
forward IM's to other Skype IM account or email
forward Emails's to Skype IM account or email

Alerts are configurable to meet your criteria regarding content, originator, priority and are sent via SMS/email and/or IM.
