HTC Wizard - that is sold among others as i-mate K-JAM or T-Mobile MDA Vario - apparently has a Wi-Fi related bug, so that war driving - i.e. driving around and searching for open Wi-Fi hotspots - is not possible wi...

hey! many people keep their Wi-Fi access points intentionally open to enable anybody to use them.
if somebody is not closing their Wi-Fi access points (through WEP, WPA, Mac address restrictions, etc) then most probably it is because it is intentional. |

| I'm a bit out of the loop here as I don't have a HTC Wizard. Does MiniStumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/)work on the HTC Wizard? Wouldn't that do the same thing as the application in the screen shot? |

Ministumbler doesnt work on the Wizard. Anyway it doesnt matter what application you use since it's the driver that is returning the false information. WZC (shown in the screenshot), WiFiFoFum, Pocket Winc, WiFiGraph, all rely on the driver giving up to date information, and in the case of the Wizard it doesnt. There is nothing that can be done. _________________ WiFiFoFum Pocket PC Wardriving

Strange, my list never looks like the above posted screenshot. My list does refresh based on my location. At work there is an open public network. I have connected to it many times. Now at home I turn on my wifi and find my home router. Hmmm...strange, I don't see the public network on my router list.
Sure this is a bug? _________________ JNGold

I can pretty much confirm this problem. See my post in the linked site.
Its very annoying, I have to switch off/on the wifi constantlly to stop wififofum hanging. http://www.navizon.com/ hangs as well. Netstumber isn't supported on the Wizard (ask such a question at their forum and you will be subject to abuse. Netstumbler is very hardware specific, so much that it fails to be a Windows program at all)
War driving (or walking) has one very important use - navigation. It can be used instead of a GPS. Microsoft have bought millions of AP details and are used in Autoroute 2006. Navizon have a GPS replacement utility. |

This is pure speculation and has little or no basis in fact. I do not know anyone who leaves their wireless network open for random people to use, this would be extremely foolish. Most open networks are home users who have no or little knowledge of any type of networking nevermind wireless.
Many war driving sites have links to WEP cracks. The reality is the majority of so called war drivers are nothing more than hackers abusing others lack of knowledge in order to hi jack paying broadband users connections. Many are much more malicious than this. |

Crap, I was going to buy one, expecting to be able to do this. Can anyone recommend a similar phone (features, price) that has more powerful functions like this?

So? Your computer asks for an IP, and their computer gives you one. Nothing wrong with that. If you crack their WEP password, you're certainly in the wrong, but if you use your computer to ask permission to use their network, and their network gives you permission, what's the problem? You're not hurting them in any way. |

| For the record, I bought an HTC Wizard, upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6, and installed WiFiFoFum, and it works just fine. |
