This phone is sensational. Imagine having real true wheel (just like in Blackberry devices!). Imagine having built-in fast Wi-Fi (802.11g), Bluetooth 2.0, support both for HDSPA and UMTS! Imagine having phone with 2...

That's the same as the keyboard on my 6700. I don't like it very much.
The wheel sounds awesome, though! |

yeah, I actually have heard one guy on the stand complaining that he donesn't like the keybyoard because keys are without distances .... but I reckon that a verison of HTC Hermes with other keyboard will be available too
it depends, I reckon that it will be around 700 USD without a contract with carrier |

this phone looks real nice - though i really want more details!!
(processor speed, sd or minisd, etc.)
i must say that i do really like the keyboard on my apache (6700) and i would say that if i see one thing about this phone that i think makes it worse, it's the lack of antenna - the antenna really helps you hold the apache securely in your hand while typing and i wonder how it would feel to not have it.
do any carriers in USA support UMTS or are we EDGE/EVDO only, as far as high speed? perhaps this phone isn't even an option! lol

processor: 300 MHz from Samsung that is faster t han 416 MHz from Intel.
slot: micro-SD
in USA: Cingular and T-Mobile are rolling out HSDPA (fast UMTS). |

Hi,
You mention that the construction of the keyboard is sturdy and solid. But looking at the 5th photograph from the top the slide mechanism looks identical to the Wizard (i-mate Jam). For the Wizard the keyboard sliding mechanism is not really that good and long lasting. People have been reporting the keyboard loosening even after a month of use.
Have you really handled this and do you think that the mechanism is much better than the Wizard ???. Though I really hope so as this is a good alternative to the Jasjar if the size of the Jasjar holds back some of us.
And thanks for the excellent review and the nice photographs.
Regards |

I had impression that slide out mechanism is more solid in HTC Hermes than in HTC Wizard - that was on the table there too - but of course one needs several months of heavy usage to say for sure.

the same as HTC Wizard or maybe a bit thinner - it is really quite comfortable size - a bit thicker than HTC Magician of course due to the keyboard

it is much faster than 200 MHz of texas instruments (TI) - I have 400 MHz from samsung in one of my phones and it is as fast as 520 MHz from intel so 300 MHz from samsung must be at least as fast as 416 MHz from Intel. |

I'm at a bid of a crossroads since I'm tired of switching devices and considering settling down with one device with a good network. Since the Hermes and a couple other devices will support HSDPA, there's no timetable when it's rolled out nationwide (specifically, I live in the New York/New Jersey Metro), and even if the Hermes will support the US frequencies for UMTS/HSDPA.
Rumors have it that it will be compatible with both bands, 1900MHz for US and 2100MHz for Europe and other countries, but again, it's only internet rumor - unless you know otherwise.
I just started a 15-day trial on the HTC Apache with EV-DO on Verizon and cannot tell you how satisfied I am with the speed and performance of both the device and the Internet connection, but I'm concerned about leaving Cingular (and paying ETFs), especially when the future of their network upgrades, these devices, and even Cingular as a company (now that they're supposedly going back as AT&T Wireless), is all uncertain.
Do you think you can provide me some insight on this matter? TIA. _________________ Bubble Buster Advanced

Sorry if I was unclear.
First, I'm not completely certain of the difference between UMTS and HSDPA.
Second, though it's known that the US (Cingular in particular) is using a different frequency for UMTS (1900MHz) than the rest of the world (2100MHz), will that be the same for HSDPA?
Is there a specific timeframe for Cingular to complete a nationwide rollout of UMTS/HSDPA?
Will the UMTS/HSDPA chipset in the Hermes be compatible or software-upgradable to support the upcoming US 3G network? _________________ Bubble Buster Advanced

HSDPA is UMTS with exension that makes faster downloads possible. It's like EDGE for GPRS/GSM.
Yes, it will be the same for HSDPA.
Time frames - no, they are just rolling it out. Carriers /operators have usually internal plans but usually they don't share them with customers.
No, Hermes will be for regular UMTS - like it is in Europe and Japan, not for USA. |
