| 3G hasn't really caught on in the UK which is a rich country, so how can it succeed in China where they have less income? |

in average they have less income but due to overall size of China they can have more users who can afford 3G.
the fact is: video calling is not enough and mobile TV over 3G networks is not compelling enough. So I don't really know the answer to your question too... |

| I realise it's a big market, I just wonder why they would launch 3G and not the older technology which would be cheaper and available to the masses. |

That business model doesn't make sense. In a low income, high population country like China, the possibility that they might have more total users who can afford 3g would mean they need to herd them all together in order to make money. But in reality, they're scattered all across the territory, so the number of potential paying customers per cell tower would be too low to be profitable. |

Good points Kupe, but a lot of the wealthy people are herded together in four or five massive cities! Shanghai's population is apparently already >25mn!
3G = cheap voice. Only handset prices will be the problem (oh, and maybe carrier strategies too). |
