This story above all is interesting to developers, but some users who already installed .NET CF 2.0 in their Windows Mobile devices - as requirement to run some software - may want to update it too as it brings also...

In my opinion it does not make too much sense installíng NET Compact Framework 2.x on a microdevice (Smartphone) as it occupies too much of the valuable memory.
There is a GPS application, whose name I forgot, which requires NET CF 2.x as a mandatory component.
Tried it with 1.x, no avail. I regretted to de-install the software from my Smartphone (Qtek 8300) again, as I prefer proper functionality of the main functions (SMS, email, MMS, DirectPush etc.) to an instable device due to occupying the memory with questionable OS add-ons.
Either handset manufacturers include 2.x directly in the ROM or they offer models with a much larger memory than the tiny 64 MB. (Note: The driver chips would even today support 512 MB and sometimes even more and browsing deep into the internet you can learn that the memory chips giving 512 MB of memory to MS smartphones would also be available to the hardware manufacturers.)
So why not offer MS smartphones either with 128+MB or each model in 2 versions: a consumer version (64 MB or 128 MB) and an executive version (256MB or 512 MB) ?
Most of the most current Smartphones (not only true for MS smartphones but also Sony Ericsson or Nokia) are not that cheap that the target groups wouldn't be prepared to pay a few bucks more to get a tremendously performing phone.
So calling on HTC:
Don't be thrifty and do not launch any new smartphone with memory below at least 128 MB !!! |
