Some people say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but if some mobile phone gets design award for its construction then one cannot argue with it... so it is good to see that also some Windows Mobile phon...

So why is the UK version Orange? possibly the worst possible colour other than green you could choose.
Read the forum at expansys, there's a few posts about it:

As you can see, they're losing sales due to their bad decision on the colour. |

So you do agree with Pocket PC Magazine's recent awards after all. You can't argue with the decisions of a jury after all. _________________ good titles are misleading!

In my humble opinion this design indeed *IS* beautiful !
I do not say that I judge a phone (just) by the design of its outside appearance.
Nobody buys a car just because it is red and red being his favorite color.
But denying the importance of the outer appearance would be stupid as it is a fact that it makes all kinds of objects simply "attractive".
Regarding Smartphones I would say that many designs are exceptionally ugly (as a Smartphone enthusiasts I am very sad about that...) and I wonder why.
Maybe it is because those large "traditional" manufacturers (e.g. Nokia, Sony-Ericsson) have large design departments and really are very experienced in applying design to products like mobile phones.
(Actually for some time in the past Nokia *just* relaesed old models disguised as new models by simply re-designing its outer appearance, until they realized that other manufacturers, namely from Asia, were doing both: applying nice outer design to modern technical design.)
So why does it seem to be so difficult to manufacture smartly designed MS "Smart"phones ?
They are produced in Asia anyway (= very low production costs). I cannot believe that there aren't capable Asian top designers which can be hired to apply a smart as well as functional design to these phones as well.
Maybe it is just the carelessness of the manufacturers of MS Smartphones, maybe it is also because we - the consumers - are not demanding enough regarding the outer appearance of a MS Smartphone ?
Let's be as demanding as the Nokia consumers, who always have to be "surprised" with a satisfying design and demand highly performant "inner values" (i.e. technical design) at the same time !!!
Let's unanimously deliver this message to the manufacturers !
After all a mobile phone is more than a cuircuit board containing the fastest microprocessors - it is a consumer article I'd like to use in public and I'd like to enjoy its appearance as well. |

no, software is other thing, I don't agree with Pocket PC Magazine's way of chosing winners. Why German Pocket PC Magazin can use votes of readers but American Pocket PC Magazine must use judges? Answer is simple: this is one of many ways of getting free publicity for the magazine.
Look, I know owner of Pocket PC magazine - Hal - I met him in person, etc - and I like him on personal level, but on professional level I don't agree with his magazine's actions... |

So, subjective voting by a jury for hardware is ok, but subjective voting by a jury for software is not. That's an interesting set of standards you've established there Acre. Why not just have general users at large vote for hardware items too? Wouldn't that be more in line with your (undocumented, informal) standards of fairness? Maybe you just have it in for Hal Goldstein even though you claim otherwise. I've found him to be a very fair and impartial source when I've spoken with him (met him when I got my first HP95LX back in 1988). _________________ good titles are misleading!

Actually just over 2 years. You must be referring to the retail date in that article - we had them long before that, Einstein. Just ask Hal. _________________ good titles are misleading!

We is HP Corvallis - hello! Well, we (HP Corvallis, remember?) did a lot of redesigning before settling on the clamshell in '89.

Nothing privileged about having an unreleased model when your job is getting coffee for its design team. |
