When we tested HSDPA in HTC Hermes we achieved (on T-Mobile UK network) speeds around 900 kpbs, but with Samsung BlackJack users get 1.7 Mbs (on Cingular USA network)...

There is no way you can get 400kbps on EDGE, it maxes out at around 160kbps. And I've never seen real life reports of 1.7mbps on Cingular, on my TyTN I only reach around 700kbps.
The fastest speeds tested today with Cingular is around 1.08mbps.

Sounds like browser may have been running through a proxy or something else messed up the results. |

yes, those results sound suspicious - I must check them yet... |

As the author of this article, let me say:
1) Thanks to MSMobiles for linking my article
2) Bandwidth speedtesting is an inexact science. I merely reported the results.
3) Results do vary, depending on location and test used.
This morning, I ran 3 tests each from 3 different testing sites, from Fairfield, CA:
1) bandwidthspeedtest.com: 2.2, 2.2, 2.9 Mb/s
2) dslreports.com/mspeed (1MB test): 989Kb/s, 1.01 Mb/s, 1.2 Mbs/
3) bandwidth.com: 3.6, 3.9, 4.1 Mb/s
Obviously, this variation shows that all tests should be take with a grain of salt. Real world results are more important.
As to whether or not I was on EDGE during my initial tests, I do not know. Depending on where I stand in my house, the phone switches between EDGE and HSDPA. I usually average about 400Kb/s at home from the bandwidthspeedtest.com test.
More importantly, the point of that section of the article was that HSDPA is incredibly fast for a cellular broadband connection. I use it to sync Exchange data and find it is more than adequate, and much faster than my old Smartphone, as well as faster than my co-workers who have Verizon broadband.

UPDATE: I spoke with a friend who is a senior network engineer at Cingular. According to him, Cingular rate limts the bandwidth to 1.8Mb/s in most geographies, except Las Vegas where it is close to 3Mb/s. He said the theoretical limit is ~8Mb/s. He also said that jitter and latency have a big impact on the synthetic bandwidth tests, so you will see big variences between them. No matter what, it is better than EVDO because it is faster AND you get voice and data at the same time. |
