Not only Microsoft is disappointing users big time, by not releasing Live Messenger for Windows Mobile, but here comes another debacle: Microsoft's own Office 2007 will produce files that will not be readable with ...

Such is progress. But then there's no Open Office for Windows Mobile, so I guess there's nothing you can do.
At time you do wonder if Windows Mobile is a product or a hobby for Microsoft. |

Windows Mobile is just a byproduct of Windows embedded division (that makes Windows CE and Windows XP/Vista Embedded - for industrial applications). I wish Microsoft could start treating Windows Mobile more seriously considering the potential : several BILLION mobile phones ... |

OK, so you're partially paying attention.
Guess what? The new Office 2007 file formats can't be read by Office 2003, Office XP, Office 2000 or Office 97 either.
Office 2007 has the ability to save any file in the "traditional" binary format (versus the new XML format), so it's fully backwards compatible back to Office 97. Despite the new file format being the default, I doubt the new format will catch on for years since many businesses will worry that the person they're sending a file to might not have the right software to open the file. By the time the new formats catch on, you'll have a new phone with a new version of Windows Mobile. |

I do think he has a valid point though. The office apps are in the ROM on your phone. On a PC you just have to upgrade.
At this time there is no version for Windows Mobile therefore one reason to use Windows Mobile is gone if you like to run the cutting edge versions of Microsoft products (some people do). |

So what should Microsoft have done? Not to change the file format to XML or make Windows Mobile office readers compatible before the Office 2007 was even released? Really, no! This is once again soooo wiseacre.
I think it's more about the phones than the OS. Those billions users don't use Windows Mobile because they don't like the Windows Mobile phones, they like Nokia brand more or they don't like anything in Windows Mobile.
Tell me wiseacre, what should Microsoft do to Windows Mobile to make it more appealing to customers? What's the critical point, which should be fixed and all those billions of users would throw away their old phones and buy Windows Mobile phones?

If the application is modularised then they could release an import filter which reads the files.
If it's XML you can do XML transformations much easier. XSLT etc...
This is Microsoft we're talking about, they like to talk about how great and innovative they are. Yet they seem to do the bare minimum they can. |

Maybe because it's pocket edition it does not have import filters. And it's a little late to add them now.

I'm not sure if any other company would do differently. Office 2007 is new and it takes time before people start using the new file format. I wouldn't send 2007 version DOC, XLS or PPT file to anybody for the next couple of years because most probably people are still using old Office versions. Actually, I'm not going to even touch the new Office before we get at least SP1 for it. So when the format is common in desktop we all have Crossbows or maybe even the next version. And maybe Windows Mobile rules the world at that time

yes, users can save office 2007 documents in old formats but: a) it is not done by default - user must remember to save in older format, b) some formatting may be lost |

Users will have to save to Office 2000 format anyway so most people probably change the default saving format to old one. And formatting will be lost in any case, that's for sure.

Looks like Office Mobile 2007 has been hacked and extracted for Windows Mobile 6.0 Pocket PCs even before MS ships it officially from Q3 this year.
Office Mobile 2007 allows you to view, create and edit Office 2007 Word, Excel and Powerpoint format files such as docx, xlsx and pptx from your Windows Mobile 6.0 Pocket PC.
