Sometimes some phones powered by Windows Mobile smartphone edition (and thus not equipped with touch screen) have some unique features not available at Symbian phones or are simply so brilliant:

... that even...

Lack of touch screen only becomes noticable when browsing the web. It's not so easy to click on links.

I agree but when you have a wheel then you can very quickly scroll to the link!

Talked to a level 3 Samsung tech today. This is not a bug, it is a
feature. Cingular has chosen to cripple java on the blackjack.
According to the Java security standard
http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=177 an untrusted midlet should be able
to have unlimited https access with a single confimation by the user.

Cingular was a part of that standard group, but has decided not to
follow it. This is not the only place they use the excuse of secuity
to keep content providers off thier network, only the newest. The best
thing you can do is contact Cingular and demand the follow the standard
at 1-800-331-0500. You pay for unlimited data access, why cant you use it?

maybe you should install MIDP Java from IBM as described here:
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5729.html

... in your BlackJack and in this way work around this problem by having your own Java virtual machine (from IBM) that has no limitations on connections?

this sounds like buying a porsche and then switching off 2 cylinders to save fuel. i had the sgh-i320 before and sold it because of this poor battery performance. it would make sense to make that phone a fraction thicker to get a powerful battery in there that lasts at least two business days with push mail enabled. any other solution - a spare battery, charging during the office hours - is way back into the 90's when phones had stand by times of only 24 hours. a strong no go for me, based upon the way i use my windows mobile devices!

cheers, lutz

I work for Cingular and we had a contest that allows you to choose any pda we have which includes, the 8525, pearl, 680 and the 700w along with the Black Jack. After using all the devices the Black Jack won out. I thought I would have a barrier without the touch screen, its so responsive and so quick and i hit 3g networks as well and the data downloads are unbelievable. It's a wonderful device with tons of options as well.

Let's not allow reality to get in the way of your entertainment here, but ... the 700W is exclusively with Verizon, just as its stablemate, the 700wx is exclusively on another CDMA network.

I have been a long time PocketPC phone user and decided now was the time to try the switch to a smartphone with a Blackjack.

Bottom line - Blackjack has gone back, 8525 on its way.

Why?

First thing to say is the Blackjack is a superb smartphone, no doubt. Its screen is incredible (love the landscape 320x240 and small dot pitch) and the scroll wheel was great. Keyboard was good too and form factor was lovely.

BUT if you have been used to PPC-PE devices you will miss a lot of things that eventually added up to a showstopper (for me at least):-

No decent tasks app - noting tasks and adding notes to the task was a primary usage for me - in ameeting, jot down some details. SP tasks have no notes and is basically useless.

No office apps - not a killer but I will miss the occasional simple spreadsheet and viewing Word docs (Picsel is good but scrolling makes it cumbersome).

No CUT and PASTE - WTF??? I have tons of times I want to paste info into a message or an app - registration keys, addresses, short email quotes and phone numbers. Cannot believe this was dropped.

No stylus is less of an issue but selecting text for pasting (above) works best with a touchscreen. Also scrolling through long docs works best when you can grab a scroll bar and drag it.

No ability to change font sizes in apps - Outlook mail is HUGE and I can only view 3 messages on each screen. PPC-PE I can shrink fonts and view 3 times as much data.

Starting apps often involves navigating a lot of "MORE" submenus to get to the app.

Blackjack specific:-

Battery life sucks - I need to go a full day on one battery with heavy data usage.

Processor is weedy for TCPMP playback and it won't do bluetooth audio while watching videos without a painfully slow frame rate. Add to this the fact that the wired headphone connector is non-standard (also an issue with 8525 but processor can do BT properly) and a pain to connect makes watching videos at the gym a poor experience.

BT Handsfree SCREECHES when first connecting to my car. I had this problem on early PPC devices but has been fixed in the latest ones - Blackjack recreates that bug again Sad

5 way selector is too flush to the device and I keep hitting the phone buttons.

Now I know many of you will say "you can fix these things with add-ons!" and i did try AgendaOne to solve my tasks and fonts problem. But email was still clumsy. "Add a new email client!" Did that, had issues with the UI and had to uninstall it. It left crap behind and I had to hard reset.

"Buy a headphone adapter" - did that, BJ got confused around TTY status and it screwed the speaker (only works when headset is plugged IN!?!?).

Buy a long life battery - can do that but need to also find a new battery cover.

But it won't fix cut and paste. Wont fix Bluetooth screech.

I will miss a few things on the BJ - the gorgeous screen for one and the QWERTYBAR keyboard - but I can't survive on smartphone OS and I don't want to run around patching it up all the time.

Perhaps once Crossbow devices ship I will reconsider.

So great phone but not for (this) power user.
