| Nice device, but I do wonder if it's not better value to just get a ultra mobile laptop and a 3G PCMCIA card. |

yes!!!
well, OQO model 02 with CDMA EVO costs 1500$ too so if only OQO would release it with UMTS/HSDPA then HTC Athena would have problems... |

I *absolutely* agree !
There is really nothing that may justify a price of USD 1,500 !
Looks cute though but probably the worst balance of money vs. practical value. |

| I agree too. The only thing that will make this handset a reasonable purchase is the heavy operator subsidies applied by the networks. Even so, I'm not sure I'd want to pay £299 or more for this handset AND be locked into an 18 month contract. |

Well T-Mobile Germany just announced it will offer the Ameo bundled with a subscription and - subsidized - at EUR 499,95.
What's the conversion between EUR and GBP currently ? x1.6 ?
Then it would roughly be the quoted EUR equivalent.
So you'd really be prepared to get yourself a new subscription (provided T-Mobile UK would offer it under same terms), have yourself committed for 2 years and be happy "just" to pay EUR 500 then ?
I wouldn't !
But of course I would be happy to get it as a present and simply use it, because it looks good and seems to be the first PDA from HTC with a solid finish (bezel looks very properly built) |

Absolutely !
I'm using a Qtek 8300 (Smartphone), a HTC TyTN (and recently also a HTC Cavalier).
Still I like the Qtek 8300 best, because it is a *PHONE* and I am a heavy phone user, who also likes to surf when mobile (only shortcome of the "old" 8300 is that it has no 3G, otherwise the most reliable Smartphone I ever had !).
When on short business trip or on vacation I take one or two of these devices with me and carry one with me all the time.
In order to check and type mails in the evening I also have a BT Keyboard (The Freedom Keyboard is great and their drivers are perfectly programmed, small and work without a flaw) in my suitcase.
So I can combine both advantages: The smallness of a mobile phone (which can be used for surfing and typing short or few mails) and the usage as "real" mobile office from the hotel room or lobby in combination with the BT Keyboard - a full-sized VERY comfortable keyboard -, which need not be carried along in my pocket all the time.
No PDA can offer these advantages within one bezel ! |

Yes, me too.
If you want it all (or an optimal trade-off from all worlds) you are much better of buying a slim notebook PC or an Ultra-slim PC, which has genuine WinXP installed, or maybe one of the better Tablet PCs.
Hey HTC !
What we need are *realiable* and fast(er) PDAs (Smartphones), with more (and faster) main memory (512 MB !), a better resolving and touch-sensitive display (minimum VGA) and - ok, that's Microsoft's task - a better Windows Mobile OS, treating system resources in a much more (performance-)economical way [again, that's an old problem with Microsoft, they are really wasting system resources, thus spoiling processor power).
Also a (more) solid bezel (what about samples with a magnesium bezel or for the luxury lovers in Rhodium; I'd be prepared to pay an additional EUR 100 for a magnesium bezel).
I do not need a PDA, which tries to mimikry a PC, because from its very concept this will fail (or run into products which are desperately overpriced).
All this can be done *NOW* using *EXISTING* parts and no rocket science is needed.
And could be done at a price between EUR 500 to 600.
Thus such products could become more widespread and hence also make up for the (slightly) lower price - compared to other PDAs (TyTN, Qtek 9000), which are already now almost beyond acceptable price levels.
Maybe a product manager from HTC would listen and think this business model over. |

Nice Decive!
If this price around $900-1000, I will consider to buy it...
Other issues for this device, here I would stress the importance of the running time to the whole of device!
For mobile function:
Sub-mini-Notebook with mobile PCMCIA card can,
Standby 300 hour?
Talking Time 330 minute?
But this device can,
Standby 300 hour!
Talking Time 330 minute!
For running operation system:
Sub-mini-Notebook can,
Realtime switch off and on? (maybe goto standby mode...but this will cut down the running time.)
But PDA device can!
*So, I think PDA(PocketPC or Smartphone) system is the best for mobile phone.
For screen:
This screen size is the best for viewing some word, excel, power point, webpage or whatever...
Sure, I don't know what the result for how many running time if that device play movie or MP3 for long time by using 2200mAH...maybe waiting to review when the device is out. Anyway, the best if it can play movie or MP3 over 8 hour....hahaaa. |
