At 3GSM 2007 we have seen opera running in several Windows Mobile phones, but when asked whether it will be pre-installed, employees of given company said:

To be honest, PIE is severly lacking in features. Microsoft wrongly assume that the mobile version doesn't need many preferences and controls.
If you look at Minimo and other alternatives they provide more features and options. Minimo gives you tabs for example.
Given there's some rather powerful PPC devices out there (the new HTC athena for example), it's about time they crammed as much of the desktop version of IE into the PPC version as possible. |

well, don't forget that power of processor in Windows Mobile devices is much smaller than in desktop PCs, so you can't have 100% features! |

It is because Opera has implemented a wider subset of Java !
There are some pages (e.g. Webmail applications), whose buttons require Java functions not supported by PIE.
E.g. writing a mail is possible but if you click on the SEND button (which is taking use of special Java functions) nothing happens and the mail is not sent.
I know two such webapplications myself, which do not work with PIE but do work with Opera.
On the other hand I have also come across buttons which do not work either.
Also in rare occasions pages viewed with the PDA version of Opera look completely distorted, while they are displayed properly with PIE.
This however does NOT affect the PC version of Opera.
And as Wiseacre said before: It is a trade-off between opportunities and processor power.
(Comment: But take e.g. Softmaker's Textmaker and you can see what is possible on a PDA, which had never been regarded possible before...) |
