Microsoft would never offer software to OEMs for free unless it's something which has strong competition or important like IE.
But what really hampers Windows Mobile is not the cost, it's down to the lack of source code availability. Large OEMs like HP and Palm could make a big difference to the quality and usability of WM. |

I don't think making Windows Mobile Open source is necessarily what is going to help. Windows Mobile and Windows CE in general are pretty modular and anyone can take what they want and re-write other components as necessary. Could it be more customized if it was open source? Sure but then you'd risk OEMs making incompatible versions and the software on one would not run on the other. If the OEMs want to improve usablility there's a lot they can do already by writing software and very few OEMs do even that. _________________ Sherwin

| I can confirm that someone who brands a HTC device (e.g. Swisscom, Orange) has to pay an additional licence to offer e.g. WM6 for Hermes !! Everybody who tells different stories is just not telling the truth ... |
