It is not i-mate but Taiwanese manufacturer Arima that has submitted this phone to FCC. However being FCC-approved doesn't mean yet commercial availability..
Some highlights about this phone:

"Conclusion: i-mate Ultimate 6150 will have it difficult to compete with other phones with 3G powered by Windows Mobile 6, because it doesn't have built-in GPS, that is slowly becoming a "must have" feature"
really? Imate 6150 is WORLD FIRST TRI-BAND 3G VGA PDAPHONE! unless Eten x800 born first! haha.
no, that 5" VGA brick doesnt count, cus it "doesnt fit in your pocket!". haha
i dont really care about build-GPS, if u really want GPS, you already got a bluetooth GPS! |

for most people built-in GPS counts more than tri-band 3G...

I agree. Probably instead of hiring professional designers, i-mate's boss, Jim Morisson, is designing these handsets himself |

And for me I'll take the VGA, 265k colour screen with 256MB of ROM, a scroll wheel, CIR and a 520MHz processor over a GPS anyday.
I already have a Zippo lighter sized GPS receiver which stays in the car and if I'm not driving around then I know where I am, thus I can use TomTom's map without getting a fix on my location.
I'm overjoyed to see this device finally appear in real life. I had almost given up that the Ultimate series was going to be vapourware (which you reported less than a month ago).
I cannot wait for the 7150 formfactor.
As for it being ugly, in my opinion it's not as pretty as some of the other devices out there, but it's far from the ugliest handset I've ever seen. Still, function over form counts in by book. If you want something without too many features that looks awesome, go buy an iPhone. |

exactly! i just dont get it y it' so important for build-in GPS! i have a bluetooth gps, and it stays in the car, it's like part of the car! and if i go somewhere, i just bluetooth it to the gps with pdaphone. what so wrong about that?
or is the reason people want build-in GPS, so they wont get lost in a shopping mall or in a amusement park? haha |

I have no idea. But if I'm cycling it's somewhere I know where I'm going, because I only cycle in a 40Km radius of home (That's right, I'm giving the Tour De France a miss this year). And if I'm walking then it's not too far from my CAR. And if I'm really lost then I'll just stop and open TomTom.
Gees, if you need a GPS to tell you where to walk around, you're probably still getting your mum to wash your face and hands before going outside to play too. Do you really need such babying?
The Ultimate devices look awesome. XGA out coupled with the Sideshow/Vista MC Extender-like application they're going to ship with it looks to be great. |

| Why are we arguing over the feature set. The beauty of these WM phones from imate and others is that there are many different phones that cater for different needs. At least customers have the many choices available for them. We should be grateful that these companies can survive and compete in this very competitive market. |

First: GPS or not GPS - many people don't want a GPS implemented in the devices. And those who wants just have to wait and see
And..they look nicer than the pics from FCC shows. There is always a difference between pics and in-hand viewing devices!
That said..I totally agree with BrianC about why arguing about this. The Ultimate devices feel really nice in the hand, you can feel the quality of it!! A pity it takes long time from launching/presentation on 12th of february on 3GSM in Barcelona to they arrive in the shops..but, thats perhaps one of the reasons why i-mate is making changes these days ? both due to heavy competition in the marked and how to make sure the devices is of quality before released ? |

In my opinion the Ultimate series looks cute and hopefully its performance is likewise.
Lack of GPS is tolerable.
However - as I already said - nobody can judge a (new) model by its (promised) specs only and by some fancy image on some web portal.
Admittedly now at least the 6150 seems real due to the test session done by the FCC.
Nevertheless this doesn't necessarily mean that this (or any other) model makes it to mass production.
I really HOPE the Ultimate series will make it, though I am not really fond of waiting a year for a "great" model from announcement until final availability.
And maybe then all its features are no longer that "great" any more...
I'm watching out for the Ultimate 8150, which may be a candidate for my next smartphone and the ETEN Glofiish X800 as a replacement of my current PDA.
Wating... waiting... |

According to the news, the imate spoke person said the 6150 and 8150 will be sold in Hong Kong and Singapore in Sept. Wonder what happens to 7150. |

That interesting, trhanks for the link.
I can't remember having seen a real picture of a 8150 before. Don't know if the 8150 e.g. had been shown in Barcelona (the 6150 was).
So sold in Hongkong and Singapore in September ?
Do you - or does anyone - know a reseller or distributor, who already has a definitive launch date and is shipping it express ?
The only vendor I discovered is Inkino from UK.
They are very friendly and responsive and apologized for having no confirmation yet about the "17 September", which they received from their distributor without further comment.
A preliminary offer can be seen at: http://www.inkino.co.uk/zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1691
(This is NOT designed as an advertisement ! I am in no way affiliated with them, unfortunately. This is just meant as an information to those, who posted here about the Ultimate !) |
