Let's face it: none of Windows Mobile platforms was designed to be used with fingers only! The smartphone version has no touch screen and Pocket PC version is designed for usage with stylus. So no wonder, that HTC ...

too bad it doesn't read my SIM contacts... i already had to delete the app because of this missing feature

why on earth would you use sim contacts when you have outlook/exchange connectivity? i gave that up ages ago...

The Windows Mobile 5 and 6 Pocket PC are both OSes and support touch screen. Whether an application is finger friendly or not is entirely up to the application developer who build the app. These days larger buttons are considered good for userability reason and hence we are seeing developers like HTC and others building app with large buttons.
