Let's face the truth: HP has acquired Compaq and the imposed bad uncool HP-like design on Compaq iPAQ PDAs that previously were totally stylish. Moreover it was Compaq iPAQ PDA on which Microsoft decided to standar...

I absolutely agree with your version of the truth !
The Jornada line (still have the 680 and 720 somewhere in a box at home) was revolutionary and the quality of its keyboard unprecedented until now.
(OK only fixed line connector for cable internet access, but there was no GPRS until 2000... And I even upgraded them with a WLAN card, terribly expensive at that time..)
The first Compaq IPAQ also was a revolutionary concept at the time it was unveiled: a real Pocket PC !
Compaq however was relying on its success and little was improved. Improvement almost came to a standstill when it was taken over by HP.
This was a big surprise and disappointment as - in my opinion - HP still is a good manufacturer (e.g. of notebook PCs).
The iPAQ series in my opinion was primarily optically styled but not really inside the bezel.
Fujitsu-Siemens came up with more sophisticated, cheaper and smaller PocketPCs, others followed.
The HP iPAQ 4700 e.g. was very stylish - manganese bezel - and had a very good hires display.
However the screen driver was very bad, the device had a lot of bugs, no GPRS (which had then already been working everywhere) and the upgrade policy for WM5 was something I will surely never forget:
Praised as future-safe investment and upgradeable to future OS in their marketing brochures this upgrade was first postponed several times, then only available for money and finally turned out to slow down the device dramatically (the 4700 has a 624 MHz processor and was afterwards slow like a snail).
I still have it at home and haven't used it any more after the WM5 upgrade.
So why should we believe that HP now is getting back to WM in a more serious way ?
Belief is good, but proof is better !
So HP will have to proove first. This will be a hard track for HP, because with many of us HP has lost it's credibility in the field of Windows Mobile. |

I love the HP Voice Messenger Smartphone . Small and very powerful. Ok the design sucks, but it runs WM6 and finally VOIP out of the box. It does everything. If you can handle small screen and appreciate the small size factor and powerful battery and EDGE is fast enough for me ( I can wait a few seconds more in downloading ) - best truly smartphone ever had so far. |
