By now HTC was showing the HTC Shift Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) - during various events and conferences - only behind a glass. However recently it has given one unit of HTC Shift to a Microsoft MVP (in Tablet PC area, f...

| MS should unify the OS. Say have a Vista mobile edition that is a lite weight Vista with Windows Mobile capability (like phone, 3G, etc). |

battery life up to 5 days in Windows Mobile mode certainly explains it if true... Makes perfect sense if you are on a long business/other trip.

Running dual operating systems could be useful for sake of battery life and capability. If storage is shared then you can use Excel in Vista when you need the extra features and then switch to Windows Mobile Excel for data entry to save battery.
Carry your laptop and your PIM without having two devices. Sure it's a big PIM, but it's a good PIM and when you don't have to carry two devices.. well, it ends up being a small laptop and an infinitely small PIM.
I'd be interested in getting one to go alongside my TyTN since I don't have a laptop, but it'll probably more expensive than I'd pay. |

| Interesting, but I still don't think it can replace a full 12" laptop, like say the IBM X31, and I can't see too many situations where you can't carry a PDAPhone and a small laptop ? |

| On the other hand, it is quite possible to have a desktop at home or in the office and only carry the HTC Shift to meetings or on the road. |

True, but I find that having everything on my laptop (and a mirrored HD) saves the hassle of having to sync files between a desktop and a laptop, to each his own of course |

Perhaps the Shift (what a catching name^^) is the first sign of Microsoft dumpung Windows Mobile at all and preparing a Vista/Vista successor version for mobile devices. Look at Apple: the took the code basis of OS X and ported it to a mobile device. I think everyone agrees that Microsoft can do that, too. The advantages are more advanced OS and only one code base for maintenance. And with Intel and AMD readying there x86 system-on-chip designs there is also no reason anymore not to put such a chip into a modern PDA/smartphone.
I think even the true to the heart Win Mobile fanboys nowadays agree that the system needs a more modern replacement or at least a complete makeover. I really like Windows Mobile, but the whole industry has evolved since PocketPC 2002, but the Windows Mobile world stuck where it was. |

| Did anyone else pickup that it's not true Win Mobile? I don't see anything that will allow you to install apps such as Tomtom or anything else. There was no soft keys, no start menu, this is not WM more of a fancy Sideshow |

| I thought the roadmap for Windows Mobile was for the next version (Photon) to be quite a substantial change from the current version (Crossbow). Hope that is still the case. |
