Instead of just forwarding dry press information, we have tested it, and unfortunately none of Windows Mobile 6 phones seems to work with this program! WiFi Radar is a new software tool for Pocket PC that can automa...

We are the developer of this software and would like to reply to this story.

1) Prior to release, we have tested the software on the HTC Touch, running Windows Mobile 6 and it worked 100%.

2) Customers have already bought it for T-Mobile Wing and several other WM6 devices and are not reporting issues.

3) We are investigating why it doesn't work on the MSMobiles device, which was a pre-release HTC Touch, handed out on a press meeting in London.

4) The manual clearly says, that if you have Windows Mobile 6, there’s no need to install the Net.Compact.Framework, because it is pre-installed on your device. However, automatic install doesn't work then

5) If there are compatibility problems, we try to fix them. Customers who experience serious problems will always be refunded if we cannot solve it.

6) A good practice in journalism is check and doublecheck. MSMobiles checked our press release, which I appreciate, but didn’t double-check back with us, which I regret.

I apologize for the lack of former double-check but I fail to see what it would bring - the fact is that during my tests this program is crashing and not working on production version of HTC Touch and some other Windows Mobile 6 phones. Once I will be able to verify that this program works on Windows Moble 6, I will publish a new news item with correction (I can help in free testing too!).

Looks like an interesting app. I've been looking for something like this for ages. However, I've had bad experiences with similar-ish apps in the past (eg HitchHiker)

It would be nice for a limited trial (say 5 days or so to confirm it works?)
I'd be more than happy to give feedback/beta test.

I have an Asus A696 running WM6 and the Pocket Wifi Radar is capable of running on it to detect and connect to public open (unsecured) wifi spots. However, it never works with my own home/office WEP secured Wifi networks no matter what WEP key I used unless I turn off the WEP security on my wireless router setup. This means although I could use it in the streets to hunt for Wifi connections, I needed to close the software and reset my Pocket PC to use the regular connection method to surf the Internet when I got home, since I could never use the Pocket Wifi Radar software to connect my Pocket PC to my own WEP-secured wireless network. I asked the developer (makayama.com) but the support responses were slow and it's still unresolved.

Up to this moment, more than three weeks since I installed the Pocket Wifi Radar, it still never worked as promised. It still could not connect to any WEP-secured networks. Various "latest" versions (1.0, 1.01, 1.1) have been offered by the snail vendor support for me to try on my Pocket PC, and I have even submitted my log files for their study of the problem, but still the same problem persists on my Asus A696 with WM6.0. In any case my Pocket PC has no problem itself because it connects easily with its own built-in wifi manager and virtually any other third-party software including the free PeekPocket software for PPC. While all those wifi software detected a few wifi spots immediately with ease, the Pocket Wifi Radar very often, if not always, detected none or reported signal too weak. I can now come to the conclusion that such software is only beta, not ready to work as promised, at least over WM6.0. Although its animated radar interface got my investment, it's certainly not worth it.
