I thought that the US Copyright Office issued exemptions to the DMCA last year which allowed users to unlock their cell phones.
So it is legal to unlock your phone, if it is for personal use and not monitary gain ... but I guess the actual phone companies don't have to help or assist you?
Am I interpreting that right?
We are allowed, if you can figure out how? |

Good luck with THAT business model. It isn't practical and simply won't work (probably never used actually).
Who wants to bet that they change shortly? Personally, I hope they stick to it and die like a bad company deserves. You can only steal ideas from the hacker community and sell it as your own for so long.

well, if it is allowed to brick (render unusable) by software upgrade a phone that was SIM unlocked then it all is not so quite clear... |

The legality of bricking or otherwise re-locking a phone has not yet been decided in court.
That's why Apple had to claim their updates were not intended to cause such problems... an obvious lie but one they had to make just in case. |

As an update to this....
1. In the US, the mobile providers will give unlock codes to those who own phones and indicate they need them unlocked for int'l travel. ATT does this regularly for TyTn users.
2. There are numerous private parties that unlock phones for $5-$25. They can be found on Craigslist, Ebay, and via user forums such as http://forum.xda-developers.com
Cheers! |
