It is sad but true: at first when XNA (.NET-based game development kit) was announced then Windows Mobile, apart from Xbox and PC was mentioned on the list of supported platforms, later Windows Mobile support was dr...

What else would you expect?
The Zune is closed to loading software on it without going through their Zune PC app and is laced with DRM.
Windows Mobile is open to outside development and allows unsigned loading of any apps (on most handsets) and has relatively little DRM.
It sucks, but such is life... just wait until the zPhone (Zune phone) comes out, then MS will drop support for WM on handsets in a heartbeat. |

Can’t wait for Sony Ericsson to get into the race, they have the potential to be a GAME changer (literarily!). Their about the only company that can compete effectively against MS in term of the number of mobile applications (PSP community is thriving with games, emulators, satnav .etc) and directly against Apple in terms of innovative design and simplicity..

Lets just hope they get it right! & it lives up to and surpasses the community mock-ups above.. downside as usual is Sony is known for being DRM/Sony Proprietary heavy.. |

Windows Mobile doesn't need XNA since it already has a port of DirectX in both managed and unmanaged form. That being said, some version of XNA would be welcomed as I could see it helping one write the same game for both platforms.
I'm experimenting with Managed DirectX now just to see if I can get any usable 3D interfaces developed. |

A few years ago a company called 3dEvolution created a games engine that brought XNA to Windows Mobile 5 NetCF, though they seem to have disappeared as of late..
Direct3D for WinMo is great, especially since its possible to port some code from the full direct3D framework to the mobile framework, making it easier to maintain a single core-game Ai. However I found that the difficulties (and possibly lack of adoption) come from the lack of hardware support e.g. gpus, drivers .etc that allow for fast 3D PSP type gaming. Sadly Apple iPhone may have the edge here as they have adopted a Japanese DoCoMo series/platform approach, whereby every 6months/1year they release a slew of devices (in Apples case one deice) that all share the same hardware specs and capabilities..
Think of this platform approach as Microsoft’s Xbox, Zune! or the Sonys Playstation.. it sets a standard of hardware and services for game developers to build against, knowing it will work across every device in the platform. So far only Nintendo’s DS and Sony’s PSP have strong mobile platforms (albeit not mobile phone based at the moment, if you don’t count PPC emulators), but it’s a no brainer that Apple and Co. will want in as well.. |
