It is not an engineering sample or some prototype, but final version of HTC touch Diamond - as it is sold now in Asia and will be soon available in Europe:

“Laggy and sluggish!!”
Seems nothing has changed from the show case model or for that matter from any other HTC/WiMo device on the market.. Its time MS/HTC started seriously investing in mobile GPUs (e.g. APX2500), the one area WiMo devices bug me the most is lack of fluid performance and is the one area I envy the competition e.g. the iPhone, SonyEriccson devices..
I really couldn’t care a toss about touch screen functionality (a personal opinion), wish MS/HTC would realize that performance should the number one priority, then if they get that right they should focus on one handed use and whatever else they feel like after that as copying the iPhones multi-touch functionality .etc |

Watching the video review, the TouchFLO performance seems very smooth and fluid, probably due to better driver and CPU. Hope it will come to Australia soon so that I can see for myself. _________________ Proud owner of HTC Touch Diamond and i-mate JASJAM. |

I think this proves no matter what the CPU, windows mobile is just plain ass slow. I guess there is a chance that WM7 might use XP embedded or even XP instead of Windows CE to overcome the performance constraints? _________________ WiFiFoFum Pocket PC Wardriving

Very true I’ve owned a lot of WinMo devices ranging from low end ~180MHz to high end ~624MHz devices, and somehow WinMo always feels like its grinding away in the background, regardless of what’s under the hood. Why does watching videos and playing emulators benefit greatly from the underling CPU/Overclocking, but not so much the OS is anybodies guess.

I don’t think moving to XP embedded is the answer, the core OS (Windows CE) is actually very good at what it does and probably in many ways more powerful than the iPhone and other mobile OS's. However, the user interface layer that runs ontop of it WM5/WM6 is crutched with decades old code (for compatibility reasons e.g. running old PPC2002 apps) that are slowing it down.
In the user interface department MS needs to start fresh, forget backwards compatibility and move forward with a slick new Ui engine, one based on new technologies e.g. WPF/Silverlight (not just web versions) and more importantly one that combines PPC/SP into one platform, rather than segmenting the market which is currently counterproductive.
Moving forward WM7 will hopefully bear fruit to a new updated Ui engine, designed for NVIDIA’s APX 2500 chipset partly developed by Microsoft ontop of the Windows CE core: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsYFXGKUIpE |
