Formerly Windows Mobile phones without touch-screen were called "smartpone" in Microsoft's terminology and the ones with touch-screen "Pocket PC". Nowadays however Microsoft rebranded it all and these terms are...

smartphones without touch-screen are much less popular

Is that really the case? MsMobiles always talk up the lack of touch screen as a limiting factor and that’s just not the case. I have all the latest SP and PPC devices at my disposal, given the choice and my extensive experience with both platforms, the Smartphone device is the only device I take everywhere and use all the time whilst my PPCs gather dust.

In my experience the Smartphone is by far the superior of the two OS's, its by far quicker to use due to its one handed-input-design and is the more modern OS (e.g. introducing soft-keys) where as the PPC/Pro is the legacy dated OS that requires one to wip out the stylus every time they want to do a simple interaction or endure fiddling around with an inadequate touch screen technology.

If Windows Mobile 7 truly unifies the UI, they will most likely adopt the Smartphone one-handed Ui not the PPC (start menu) interface and add touch capabilities to the SP version to aid with satnav/touch capable applications.

Yep I agree with Stoic33, I never managed to use a PPC phone for more than a few days before the interaction annoyed me. I did however use the S620 widescreen QWERTY smartphone for months - nicer form factor, simpler display of menus and easy to use. I think the reason why PPC is more popular (if it truly is) is because of the big business deals companies have with the operators, and these businesses sacrifice usability to be able to run Excel, data capture and other business type stylus based apps. For me this is the main reason why the PPC interface just isn't changing at all, they don't want to mess with what the business customers are used to.

With touch screen PPC being so bad I really never thought touch screen phones would be popular, but then when I used the iphone and was so impressed with its speed, simple finger-based UI and multi-touch features I knew it was just Microsoft to blame for their bad design. We'll see if Apple bring out a different UI for an iphone of different form factor, I really doubt it.
