Why right now? Well, also HTC has preempted announcement about 3G iPhone by announcing HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro. Also several other Windows Mobile manufacturers announced their new phones. So Microsoft ob...

This is nothing more than spin. Microsft selling windows mobile software licenses is not the same as selling devices. There is a reason Microsoft never talk about market share and thats because in Q3 2005 it was 18% and now its only 11%. Microsoft despite eating up palms market share have still lost out in North America to RIM and iphone. The claims of Steve Ballmer clearly should the lack of ideas in Microsoft in regards to the mobile market. Did he really think rehashing wm 5 with a few bolt-ons and buying palms market share would earn him his predicted 60-80% market share. Did he really think apples slick truely innovative device (we know this as wm consumers constantly compare their devices to the iphone and developers are constantly trying to copy features) would only get 3% of the market share.

Here is a better article really showing the position of windows mobile in the market place.

yeah, I wish Microsoft announce something before the launch of 3G iPhone like "here is download page of new IE with Flash" or "Windows Mobile 7 goes on sale this year"...

Announcements do really matter to me. I am not sure how many consumers would really benefit that much from having PIE with a flash plugin. However windows mobile 7 has to be Microsofts answer to the iPhone or market share will drop as Microsoft get left behind. The feature list is not the problem with WM its the wait cursors, poor performance and dated looks. I don't think it needs much more in terms of features just better execution. Though I could not agree more with another article, Microsoft has to avoid cutting features and let consumers decide what is a secruity hole or not.

My understanding is that MS has licensed the flash Lite 3 player from Adobe for inclusion to WM6.1 recently . However, the process takes time. Adobe sends MS the code. MS tests the code with WM and PIE. Then MS to send the code to OEMs . OEMs build the phones and send the phones back to Adobe for testing and certification. This is going to take some time.

As for pre-announcing products like WM7 which isn't immediately available for sale, I am not sure that is clever strategy. People would wait and not buy existing available models.
