Its about time! I'm glad someone out there (Cnet) is doing some honest reviewing, unlike the HTC suckups! I got my hands on one of these devices and in all honesty i think a rating of 5.9 out of 10 is probably too good, i would rate it at 4.7 just for a good attempt gone horribly bad.. they certainly didn’t listen to consumers when they built it.
nb. can see this article getting buried in a hurry |

I have been using a diamond for the last week. I vowed never to purchase another HTC device again after being stung with the Kaiser. I borrowed the diamond from work. The biggest positive from this device is the form factor, which will of course not suite everyone. Though again this is an overhyped device which ultimately fails to deliver on what it promises. Touch Flow 3D is a gimmick which is unresponsive and sluggish, I predicte most people will turn it off when the novelty factor wears out. HTC need to realise performance is just as important in usability as flash graphics. Despite Edward claiming to the contary I can see slow down and an unreponsive touch screen, this can be seen in his videos posted earlier. It still performs extremely poorly in direct or bright sunlight becoming unusable outdoors on a decent day. The touch wheel is not widely supported and the screen turning off when receiving a call is a nigthmare. The small screen even if it is vga makes the benefits of opera almost redundant. When zoomed out the text is unrecognisable leaving you no option but to zoom in and scroll around. The camera lense is poor though can be improved by removing a cover inside the casing invalidating any warrenty.
HTC have blundered here as they have done with the Kaiser. This is just another rip off device, championed by those who are clearly influenced by free devices or any lack of impartiality. Clearly some reviewers are now speaking out about the failures of this device showing that HTCs viral marketing machine and the web sites who are part of it have lost credibility. |

I don't know their reason for not universally enabling it. But for for the power users that want to enable it for specific apps you can enable it though a registry change. Unfortunatly you have to know the class name for an application, not something that is easily acquired without the use of developer tools. This may be an opportunity for third party application developers.

Create key and value, as below
HKLM/Software/HTC/SmartTouch/RescoExplorer
(String Value) ClassName = RESCO_EXPLORER_CLASS
(DWORD Value) Mode = 4
(DWORD Value) WheelCount = 2
reset
you may use scrollwheel at RescoExplorer like jog.
if use other apps, you must know app's class.
RescoPhotoViwer's class = RESCO_PICVIEW_CLASS
InternetExplorer's class = IExplore
File Explorer 's class = FEXPLORE
CorePlayer's class = wCorePlayer
etc...
Dword Value "WheelCount"
1 = Movement of one every 36 degrees
5 = Movement of one every 180 degrees
10 = Movement of one every 360 degrees
Probably, you cannot delete created keys.
To delete it, stop SmartTouch Service.
HKLM/Services/SmartTouch
but...It doesn't seem to be so convenient... |
