Mostly true, but until Microsoft gets their act together and combine their Smartphone and Pocket PC platforms into a unified competing force, refresh the user interface so that its consistent, consistent, consistent and has no lags (the most important iPhone feature), they will have a hard time selling devices and will continue to face major hurdles ahead.
And more importantly if they don’t do it fast (months not years), their market share will drop in the face of rivals like apple and Android if it lives up to its hype as an open-os (which is yet to be seen), then it will have the best of both worlds with anybody being able to add sleek iPhone like Ui’s and complete WinMo customisability.
So if you are a first time buyer (average consumer or a granny) deciding whether to buy an iPhone or a Windows Mobile device and money wasn’t a factor, sadly the better of the two devices is the iPhone (especially if money isn’t a factor) because although the iPhone is locked down and restrictive, current WinMo devices suffer from usability issues, lags and inconsistencies so enjoy the iPhone tell Microsoft gets their act together and release a better mobile experience 6months or 6years from now.
Nb. However if you’re a super techie then either would do as you probably have long figured out how to bend either device to your will.. |

you don't have to be super-techie to be in need of copy and paste and to need more than one application at once. Also requirement to have good camera in your phone is nothing special nowadays... and also camera that can take videos.
So there are many reasons to use Windows Mobile over iPhone also for consumers, not just for techies. |

| agreed on paper WinMo phones are better but usability, inconsistent interface and the poor OEM support of the OS and hardware makes the experience suck. i have keep going to the hacking community to get updates, better apps, bug fixes, etc. i get better support from these folks |

Stop!! Comparing every WinMo device on the market to Apples iPhone, not all WinMo devices have good cameras, not all WinMo devices can take good video in fact most are rubbish at both and are no comparison to the cameras in Aisan devices.. and what’s the use of running multiple apps if the OS keeps lagging and stalling.
Bottom line is the iPhone is a consumer phone today! and winmo is not a consumer device. I like my WinMo device because I put in a lot of time and effort into making it usable. As an out-of-the-box experience it’s laughable at best and I would never recommend it to my girlfriend, never mind my grandmother. |

dont need to compare to all or every winMo device!
just compare it to Sony X1 !
Sony X1 makes iphone a joke! actually iphone is just a toy!
any geeks/nerds/business men will not touch a iphone!
IF U WANT A TOY, GET IPHONE!
IF U WANT SOMETHING MORE THEN JUST A TOY! WAIT FOR SONY X1 !
i'm too lazy to list all the specs on X1, go look/search it yourself!
everything on x1 is more superior to iphone! |

The new crop of iPhone apps are certainly amongst the best in the mobile world. However, there are plenty of excellent Windows Mobile apps out there that rival or surpass iPhone apps ... including some which make Windows Mobile devices look as sexy as iPhones.
Check out Viigo's Project Tango for example ... you can see the movie at viigo.com/wmbeta

I'm looking forward to the Xperia myself, hope it lives up to the hype and wish they released a non keyboard version that’s slimmer.
But the Sony X1 isn’t out today! and to make a fair comparison: What i meant is that if you looked at the iPhone specs and compare it against all WinMo devices available today you’ll find that very few WinMo devices can match ALL the iPhone 3G’s built in hardware features: 3G, GPS, WiFi, Camera, touch screen and slim dimensions.
The size alone and built-in GPS eliminate most current WinMo devices on the market that are bulky or lack GPS from even being considered as equal competitors (because they simply fall into a different weight/feature category). That leaves only the latest WinMo devices the HTC Diamond and the Samsung Omnia as direct competitors to the iPhone. After comparing these two devices (which seem to have been inspired by the original iPhone) in terms of usability, both fall short with the only common feature being a noticeable interaction lag and interface inconsistency.
Maybe the Sony X1 will change all that, but then maybe we will have to wait for a new OS from Microsoft, bottom line is that WinMo isn’t quite their today but it could have easily been if MS didn’t fall asleep at the wheel. |

u want microSD slot in iphone, wait for iphone 4.0 in late 2009!
u want removable battery, wait for iphone 5.0 in early 2010!

Stoic, you took the words right out of my mouth. Or maybe you're just repeating what I said on the podcast two weeks ago.
It's all very well and fine to compare operating systems, but you need to pin down one WM device to pit against the iPhone since not all devices have the same features/functions.
While I'm also very much looking forward to the Xperia, I'm off to buy the Treo 800w on Monday morning. |

I am comparing here PLATFORM (iPhone OS X) to another platform (Windows Mobile) and the fact that Windows Mobile has so many form factors is an advantage and surely one can compare a plaform with a platform? |
