Shortly speaking: with .NET it is much easier to write applications but graphic-intensive applications require more difficult way (native code) so this new, just released, library - Managed Open GL ES - makes it pos...

I've heard this before but I've never seen any statement or evidence from Microsoft that suggest Direct3d is being phased out. The GAPI (Game API, which predated Direct3d) was marked as deprecated as of Windows Mobile 5. I can only imagine that this rumor was started from GAPI being phased out.
Looking at Windows CE 6 (the foundation from which Windows Mobile 7 is to be built) Microsoft has actually expanded the capabilities of Direct3d. _________________ MCAD .Net , MCTS (Web, Windows) |

The rumor probably stems from the fact that Direct3D has been a complete and utter failure on windows mobile. Not only have hardly any manufacturers included drivers, nevermind GPUs, EVEN Microsoft's own development emulators either don't support it or don't work properly.
Supporting OpenGL ES gives you the extinct Dell Axim and the Diamond as targets. Thus, I can't see many developers making use of this either. _________________ WiFiFoFum Pocket PC Wardriving

With the exception of the emulator made for Xbox 360 backwards compatibility and Virtual PC for Mac I don't think Microsoft's ever been big on emulating accelerated hardware. Virtual PC for Mac had it because the company that made the software (before Microsoft purchased them) was already doing it, and the emulator on the XBOX 360 had to do it for for providing a comparible experience to the original X-box.
But when I think of business and productivity applications I can't think of many that would benefit from 3D acceleration, though there's quite a few phones that would benefit from a little 2D/GDI acceleration. _________________ MCAD .Net , MCTS (Web, Windows) |
