Why would you like to buy expensive smartphone if you can get for 40-50 % of the price get a netbook with built-in 3G (HSDPA, up to 7.2 MB/s)?

sorry for misunderstanding: in Europe very often the best tariff for voice (unlimited *voice* flat rates, ultra-cheap calls to the world) are available at one operator/tariff but the best tariff for data (unlimited *data flat rate - even pay as you go, or very cheap) are at other operator/tariff.

so 2 SIM cards are needed obviously.

with linux i will have trouble with softwares? yeah, sure...

I was thinking about a netbook with HSDPA (ECS) but I won't buy it. why? because I can just use a regular one with bluetooth PAN to my Windows Mobile phone.

only one contract (the rates are the same mostly here), lower costs.

I have 500MB included with my phone contract, and it costs just a few € to quadruple that...

built in HSDPA is nice if you are willing to pay for another contract and don't want to setup PAN. thats about it.

that's just not true in the uk. Cheapest for both is three. Second cheapest for both is t-mobile, etc

Not necessarily true. Depending on usage, O2 Simplicity deals can work out much cheaper than Three, and without a lengthy contract.

Well, here in Germany, o2 has a phone flat for 20 EUR and 10 EUR for 200 MB or 25 EUR for flat Data. Besides that, you can get up to 3 SIM cards using the same contract and capable of using all 3 for data connection at the same time.

So I have one in my iPhone, one in my HTC Touch Pro and one in my Notebook with UMTS-Card (soon perhaps Netbook with integrated HSDPA). Costs me a total for flat o2 to o2 and o2 to land line and flat for data on all 3 cards only 45 EUR per month. THAT's cheap.
