Well the Home's not the only Icon that should not be there.
There are some other Free license Icons being used in the shots.
And the left one has a way to low Ressolution on the Clock icon to. |

Multi-touch is really unimportant in a phone unless it's primary function is as a media player. And even then, so what? It's a gimmmick.
Much more important is a robust voice command interface. |

Oh, glad to hear that it was faked as I was rather unimpressed with the screenshot.
Talking about the voice command, has anyone tried out the Live Search voice recognition. I'm very impressed. I didn't have an american accent and yet it just works out of the box. No training required too. _________________ Proud owner of HTC Touch Diamond and i-mate JASJAM. |

| I love Live Search and use it quite often. No 411 fees, and can be done one-handed. Just today I looked up a doctor for my wife, by just saying the office name, and then saved the result to Contacts with just a few clicks. Very handy. |

As for multi-touch, I hardly ever use it on my iPod touch. Much easier to double-tap, which is why Apple included alternative gestures.
It's not an important feature at all. There are other gestures that can be used, from double-tap to circular zoom motions to using actual buttons or the circular button on the Touch Pro.
Multi-touch makes much more sense on a large horizontal screen, like Microsoft Surface. On a handheld, it's mostly a gimmick. |

I'd say it's actually a fairly significant component of why the iPhone/iPod Touch is, for the vast majority of people, a better web browsing and media playback platform than Windows Mobile.
With multi-touch and an instant/accurate drag-scroll response, Mobile Safari and the iPhone Photos app are far more intuitive and smoother than Opera or the HTC stuff with single-touch and un-natural touch "gestures" (which have to be learned) or pull-up menus (e.g. for zoom), instead of the natural motion of just touching and dragging or pinching it to move or resize.
Apple's done an incredible job of extending a touchscreen platform to a level such that anyone can use it. Sure, we enthusiasts can all figure out how to deal with the quirks of having to pull up a menu to zoom or rotate something, but it's clearly not always optimal even for us. |

Hi. I've been programming touch systems for over fifteen years as a job, and much longer for personal entertainment.
First, let's not confuse multi-touch (as in using more than one finger) and fingertip scrolling. They are totally separate things.
There is nothing intuitive about the pinch. Without it being demonstrated, nobody would figure it out. Ditto for the unique two-finger scrolling necessary in textareas and divs... apparently many owners never find out that trick and are frustrated until they find a forum and ask about it.
Personally, I find that the double-tap to zoom in on a website column is a great feature and much easier and more accurate than pinching.
So again, multi-touch isn't a necessary feature, although it's more useful in something like say, an emulation of guitar strings or piano keys, where people really do often use more than one finger.
As for finger scrolling, agreed, that is more easily learned. Interestingly, it was not an original design concept for the iPhone, which used scrollbars before a programmer showed Jobs the alternative method. However, having to finger scroll to the bottom of a long document is a horrible UI choice. That's when you wish for bars or buttons.
I think the best selling part of the iPhone UI is that it's fun and looks fluid even when it actually isn't. (For instance, apps don't really start up very quickly... each one has a static picture included, which is what you see getting zoomed out ... it takes a few seconds before the real app starts and is usable.)
Cheers - Kev |
