All that matters to them is number of WM licenses sold. Doesn't matter anyway, XDA Devs will dump IE 6 from a leaked ROM before a new phone even comes out.

it is not certain yet! If Microsoft hooked it deeply to OS then extracting may be impossible

Nope. IE6 can be easily cooked into new ROMs. For example I'm using it since the first 20xxx OS builds in my old HTC Universal. I've taken not only IE but some other OS parts too.
Just wait for some time, now it is too early to publish these cooked ROMs, otherwise MS would be angry. And WM 6.5 is not final yet, at least there are some things that can be improved.

What's the zune/media player line in WM6.5? Gapless playback and huge playlists possible?

Seems that some of the XDA developers have access to the Windows Mobile AKUs (the product needed to build your own images of Windows Mobile). Its not necessary to extract it if you can just make your own image.

General question here: who among us has a primary phone that is more than a year and a half old?

Yep. Had my HTC Universal since, well, when did they come out then? I've yet to find anything else that does what I need better:
Remote desktop (high res screen and good keyboard needed)
IRDA for my HP Capshare scanner
Full size SD for transferring data between a device which only outputs to USB (I've got a Sandisk SD card which is also a USB stick)
Decent exchange client
Acceptable web browser
Occasional 'phone calls.

If it had HSDPA, I'd want to keep it longer.

Before that, I used an original XDA from more or less launch until launch of the Universal.

Thank goodness XDA-Developers exist. It's sad when you can get a millions times better support from a community of phone junkies than from the company that actualy makes the software. Way to go M$.

Isn't that ironic? We all have seen and some of us complained that MS doesn't demand from its OEMs better hardware, doesn't "raise the bar". Remember, when WM6 came out, and firs devices we had with 200mHz processor and 64 RAM? Yes, those buggy, unreliable phones, that would crash and freeze at the first opportunity they get! And now, when it seems MS finally start listening to our outcry for better hardware, we have someone to whine that "MS cares only about licenses it sold"!. Truly, damn if you do, damn if you don't, There's no win situation for MS!
