Roz Ho manages team of 500 people, who work on "project pink" aka "Zune Phone". It looks however that this phone will not be unveiled at CES 2009 (January 2009) after all:

Just one more rumor bites the dust - as expected... Not the first, not the last one... "Microsoft phone" rumor appears often here - in my opinion it is usually more wishful thinking than reality...
But seriously - what would be the point in Microsoft doing *seriously* hardware for WM phones? (I do not mean just some technology demonstration).
If they do some Zune toy - no problem with me, maybe some teenagers will buy it (well, if they find it "cool" enough which I am not at all certain).
WM has healthy support of hardware companies - this would be destroyed...
And for what? Just to prove that Gates and Microsoft can have their own phone as Jobs and Apple? Trying to copy Apple and hope that people will sit down in amazement, throw away all other phones and buy a new one from Microsoft? I hope people in Microsoft are not so stupid to go that way (though to my amazement many people would thought it a good option).
If I was a Microsoft hater, I would wholeheartedly agree... Just forget all your advantages and waste resources in mindlessly copying what worked for another... The disaster assured...

Agree. MS should focus on improving WM and the platform/ecosystem. There are plenty of rooms for improvement and innovation there. _________________ Proud owner of HTC Touch Diamond and i-mate JASJAM. |

| it is *not* just a rumor - Roz Ho has 500 employees working on it - these are employees outside of Windows Mobile division. |

Well the problem is that despite having all these hardware and carrier partners, WM's getting destroyed by the iPhone.
All the dozens of WinMo phones on the market put together now represent a smaller US and global market share than just Apple's one device. Apple has enabled more mobile third-party app sales in just these few months than Microsoft has in so many years of Windows Mobile and Pocket PC.
Perhaps most importantly, the iPhone crushes Windows Mobile in the numbers game. Microsoft expects around $300 million in Windows Mobile profits this year, compared to $4.8 billion for the iPhone. No real comparison. ( http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/12/rumor-zune-phon.html )
Microsoft clearly needs a new mobile platform model, and quickly. |
