Times are difficult and Motorola phones powered by Windows Mobile were not selling well enough apparently. What platform will Motorola use now for smartphones?

I wonder if MSFT was aware of this when the statement was made about there being fewer WM phones.

If they are moving completely over to Android then it obviously is the platform.

Motorola finally realized that they have failed since the early 90's on creating or maintaining a decent phone OS. Some bean counter apparently saw that if they sell 2 million WinMo phones next year that they will pay 70 Million dollars in fees to Microsoft for licensing. So some other jughead figured if they didn't have to spend that 70 million, they'd have 70 more million in the bank.

Problem: You may not sell 2 million Android phones.

It's not like they weren't turning a profit on WinMo. They're just greedy (and stupid). Now personally, I wouldn't kill that MS relationship until Motorola's Android sales have caught up with or doubled WinMo sales. At that point they could justify it. Until then, it's a VERY risky decision for a company who seemingly hasn't made a good decision since the RAZR.

hey Motorola, don't say I didn't try to help or warn you.

On that note I recall an article written by a member of the Windows Embedded team in which he pointed out that while the Linux OS is free other components may have to be licensed. Does any one know if that same concept is applicable to Android?

Nope, the whole OS is provided for free. If there's any licensing costs then Google is fronting the money for them.

As soon as they sell into Europe someone will have to pay Sisval's MP3 licence and it will not be Google. Tried that with Windows Mobile and Microsoft would have nothing todo with it (despite it being "covered" in our WM licence), neither did Sisval want to licence MS directly. It much rather screwed over each and every individual manufacturer/OEM.

Sounds consistent with another article I just found in which it stated the OS would be free but some of the codecs would need to be licensed.
