This probably falls under the new FTC regulations of full disclosure if you're "in bed" or receiving kickbacks from the people you're reviewing.
http://overlawyered.com/2009/10/required-ftc-blogger-disclosure/
(see also http://cmp.ly/ which is very handy for disclosing your relationship with the product you're reviewing)
Also, I'm sure it's not just Microsoft who does these things. This is the kind of stuff that most big companies in most industries do. It's a bit slimy and IS engineered to gain favoritism with the reviewers, but any reviewer with any kind of integrity won't let it affect their judgment much. And if they don't get invited to the following year? then at least they were honest.
As consumers, we also have the burden of deciding for ourselves. If you read someone's review, buy based on that review and end up hating the product, then you probably know not to listen to that person again. It's always safer to read MANY reviews, get a good cross section of opinions, facts and other tidbits of information then make an informed decision ourselves.
The issue being pointed out here, though, is that "informed decisions" can't be made if the people informing us are biased. Guess what, though.. even without these 'bribes', people are biased and that always needs to be factored in, whether they're a company shill or not. |

I love this time of year - it's when MSMobiles acts like a middle-school nerd who's just been stuffed into his locker by the cool guys on the football team.

no, by now I realized how illegal, corrupt, amoral this practice is | So, 7 years ago you had no morals, but now somehow you do? Interesting.
| EJR's Article wrote: | | Mobius site (mobiussite.com) claims that Mobius group includes "world's most influential technology pundits and online writers" but it is a lie: many Mobius members have sites with low traffic and low ranking | I think you're confusing influence with entertainment. The folks invited to Mobius are influential. Folks that run sites like this are entertainers. Microsoft gains nothing by investing in entertainers.
Edward, I noticed something interesting when reading this article. When you compose while in a rage, your English grammar suffers significantly. When you simply report the news, your English grammar is nearly flawless. Do you have ghost writers most of the time or do events like Mobius act like kryptonite and rob you of your super (journalistic) powers? _________________ good titles are misleading!
