no, from what I have heard from multi-platform developers they are earning only 5-10% from Windows Mobile and 80-90% from iPhone app store. |

That is dire. With just 300 apps the Marketplace should be a gold mine right now. |

It definitely is not. I have two application on multiple markets (including US) and I got about 200 sells by now and I was there from the very beginning, that means exactly one month by now. Considering the small price you need to take for your software on such a market, this about covers going to a restaurant once a week, but that's it.
Given the huge amount of work done, only to get into the market, this is a total disprofit - at least for now... |

Just one lone voice, but I would say devs should stick with it for a while longer. Two things come to mind - there arent that many official 6.5 phones available and coupled with the general negative view of WM there arent that many users available to buy your programs (I would say Xda users dont count as they are not the typical marketplace user). Lets see how the HD2 affects things as it seems this device will sell a ton.
Secondly as as consumer I do like the marketplace and have at least 4 applications I would buy (Positoron, Flight Commander, Meon, Sideline) so there is definitely the potential to get your application seen by more people who wouldnt normally see it and earn some bucks. At the same time a brief look at prices is enough to send some people running for the hills, especially when you know what the same application costs on another platform. Ultimately though, I can see why application stores are so popular, they really open up a lot of programs to you and increase your (at least mine) enjoyment of your device. I check the marketplace multiple times a day looking for new cool programs.
There's no question though, this is another area MS has not performed adequately and one would think they would be bending over backwards to please devs and promote the marketplace more aggressively to consumers.
Rest assured though, I will NOT be purchasing any fart apps! |

Microsoft are in a bit of a catch-22 situation. People won’t buy phones unless there is a good marketplace but developers wont develop for windows marketplace unless there is a big market. Saying that, I do agree that the issues pointed in this article should be fixed. Ultimately, there is several reasons why Windows Mobile is failing and the marketplace is one of them. I would add to that an outdated interface plus not having integrated music/movie marketplace (zune) in Win Mobile. I’m hoping all these issues will be resolved with Mobile 7.
Finally, I think Microsoft have the keys to their own success with Windows Mobile, gaming. Take what they did well on the Xbox and apply that to the Windows Mobile platform.
Also, some food for thought : http://www.newsweek.com/id/216788. |

I agree with you. Per app submission of $99, plus all the hurdles and restrictions.
Forget about it. |
