So how much memory has this thing got? Unless we're talking 4GB+ it won't be anything like an iPod killer.
Nokia killer? To do that it's going to need to sell many, many millions of units. How many units has Microsoft sold in total so far? 750,000? |

at this moment it is just 512 MB - the mini-SD card.
soon: mini-SD card with 1 and 2 GB are coming.
in 1-2 years also hard disks will come to cell phones.
how many units sold? well, suffice to say that HTC is now shipping over 500 000 units of C500 monthly to Orange... it is coming, don't worry, this winter will be the breakthrough... |

Yes, but you described this phone as an iPod killer. With 512MB, it isn't going to please the iPod crowd. And how much will a 2GB mini-SD card cost? More than an entire iPod, probably.

And where did you pluck this figure from? Care to provide a link? |

|
|
It's about 5 years too late to be an ipod killer - first, it looks like they dreged it out of the 1999 design bin. It's not a clamshell - it looks like a phone for a 12 year old girl (if she'll use anything that ugly) and it's got 1/8 the memory of an ipod plus you have to diddle with cards ... and I'm sure that interface will require a lot of toggling up & down to play one song. Now if it were $99 dollars, that might do for a pre-teen but at the price of a cool phone + an ipod?
Only if you have a time machine is this an ipod killer - this will a 2-month seller before it gets pushed back into LIMITED AVAILABILITY or OS because it's just too damn fugly but they'll be too embarassed to admit it.
I think it's time to banish the phrase ipod killer unless it minimally fulfills two requirements:
4 GB drive and it's not fugly.
Then it's probably still not an ipod killer because the interface will be stupid but at least you have to have 2 target points before proceeding. |

stupid interface? it's not a problem in a smartphone - there several music players (programs!) that have various user interfaces that suit anybody.
iPod can't do that... |

oh my god...these news posts are getting more and more "interesting" as the week progresses...i've never seen so much pro ms smartphone propaganda on a site...nevermind the anti symbian garbage going on...
i can understand this site is pro ms but lets refrain for the pointless symbian bashing...keep your minds on track boys...
i mean i like ms smartphone and all but come on...this is going overboard...have some kind of journalistic integrity to retain whatever credibility you have left...
i like this site alot, if for nothing else, then latest news and pics of upcoming phones but unfortunately know better to veriy the info elsewhere....
just mho heh.
i'm hoping this wont get erased quicker than it got posted...

oh yeah...being a developer i agree software can do wonders on improving certain shortcomings, but to say its an ipod killer especially with such glaring hardware shortcomings is just silly if you ask me...
this phone is as much an ipod killer as a pontiac fiero is a ferrari eater... |

A 1Gb SD Card is listed on Amazon for just $148: SanDisk SDSDB-1024-A10 Secure Digital 1GB
I heard that 2Gb card are also imminent, and would be supported on any ms smartphone. It would be interesting to see if these phones can be succesfully marketed as music players. Clearly no one wants to carry around multiple devices, but will these phones have the adequate battery life to really support this feature??
Incidentally there have been about 3 million ipod devices ever sold. On the scale of things this is a pretty small number to beat in even the smartphone market.

All I can say is that I'm very surprised that anyone still develops non-clamshell Smartphones that look like artefacts from the past...
I'm afraid I will have problems finding good replacement for my Mio8390 - it looks and feels so well built and more like high end, business phone, not a plastic teen toy... |
