HTC is developing now Microsoft Smartphone cell phones of next generation: equipped with QVGA display (320x240) and with built-in Wi-Fi. Let's face it: using Wi-Fi as add-on card:
... while already possible ...

Beyond allowing Wi-Fi connection with smartphone these are the features I would like:
1) Internet access on phone at DSL speed capable connections. I think EDGE might deliver that already
2) The ability to subscribe to an unlimited internet connection through my cell phone provider. (That way I have an equivalent internet connection that I have at home)
3) The ability to use that connection from all my other computers. Maybe linksys router can be hacked to talk Wi-Fi to the phone an then use the phone's internet connection to provide service to the other computers in the home. (I am looking for feedback here to find out if this is possible)
With the above 3 capabilities I could carry internet with me anywhere I go. If it wasn't for the fact that I might want my computers at home connected while I am away with my cell phone I would be all set. If I could share that internet connection between my phone and some kind of cell phone base station for a minimal extra fee then I could justify getting rid of my DSL provider entirely. How's that for thought.
Cell providers are you listening. Think how much money you could make if I and everyone like me paid you instead of verizon for my internet connection.
Linksys are you listening. Talk to cellphone providers about creating an interface device to cell network to provide internet access. It can either be integrated into a router you create or an add on for an existing router.
Cable and Internet providers are you listening? Time to get into the wireless busineess.
So people where are we lacking on technological capability to accomplish this. |

Can anyone tell me is it possible to use "Socket" or "Sandisk" Wi-Fi SD
Card over O2 "Xdaphone"? Somebody told me it must preload the Driver first then you could use it. Unless it's impossible to use Wi-Fi SD Card over "Xdaphone".
Thanks! |

porting to ms smartphone platform is not that easy. processor speed is critical for such a task. there are few other issues as well.
i know what i am tallking about because my company just about to release to world revolutionary technology providing similair solution at 6.5kbps full duplex rate, optimised for speech and noisy conditions. minimum processor requirements we have is 166Mhz (ARM, XScale, etc). apart from that, there also something very exciting about this technolgy i can not disclose at the moment. but as soon as product is released i should be able to privide more information.
Just to give you some idea: Skype bandwidth consumption is at least 30kbps with acceptable sound quality, no GPRS. Our product reqires 5 times less bandwidth providing bag of extra features (can't comment on it yet)
P.S. I have strange feeling that information you have disclosed ( letter from HTC engineer) has to be subject of MNDA. otherwise there is something wrong there.
Cheers! |

| It's a long shot but it could happen. Imagine free calls over wireless broadband on these devices. Big telcos should be very scared. Apps like Skylook - http://www.skylook.biz - on these devices will also make life interesting. |
