Today we had an opportunity to play with HTC Universal and we have taken some pictures of it, including comparative photo shots of HTC Universal together with HTC Typhoon (Orange SPV C500 aka Audiovox STM 5600) and ...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRI-BAND AND NOT QUAD!!!
Why does all the carriers/manufacturers hate the US? T-Mobile has the smallest share of the market over here and still everybody designs phones ONLY for them.
YOU HAVE TO MAKE 850MHZ phones to SELL IN THE US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET THESE MORONS TO UNDERSTAND THIS.

Oh well, just one more cool 3G device that will never make it in the US. One more and I may just move to Europe for it |

... you don't even have a unique network across the us - your market is by far not as interesting for phone manufacturers like europe is - thats the reason why they go for europe first and then for the usa! it may sound hard but it is the naked truth...
cheers, lutz |

I kinda looks wierd when in PDA configuration.
And it lacks the usual hardware buttons that you can find in Pocket PC and Pocket PC phones. You won't be able to play games with a D-pad only. |

It is still looking kind of big!
A comparison to a HTC Blue Angel would be a lot better than to an SPV C500... _________________ www.ruttensoft.com - Smartphone development

Of course it is kind of big - it has so many features. Sorry but I had only C500 with me - I am not convinced that HTC Blue Angel is worth anything because it has outdated processor and no mini-USB so I don't have it.
However when you hold this phone - HTC Universal - in your hands, it really doesn't seem to be big - and since you can carry it in closed form (so that touch screen is hidden because it is rotable) then you can carry it even in the pocket because touch screen is not susceptible to be scratched by keys that you have in your pocket!
It feels a bit like nokia communicator in that sense - possibility to close the display - but since display is rotable and can be set into PDA mode too it is much better than nokia communicator series. |

Did you feel that the "answer" and "end" buttons were in a useable location? Did the keyboard actually seem useable (it seems to small for regular use and to big for just thumb use)? I cannot tell from the pictues, what kind (if any) expandable memory are we getting? Any news on memory in general? Any other form factors that you felt are postivies or negatives? Not that they would know, but did they say anything a CDMA version and a American carrier (namely Verizon) picking this phone up? |

Any chance at all that this could be used with apple? or if not, then the likelyhood that there will be some third party sogtware to integrate the two (a'la missing sync)? _________________ pheonix |

It looks great, but there's three basic problems:
1. It's wide, and therefore uncomfortable to hold up to your ear. I guess a bluetooth headset would fix that.
2. There is no cursor moving object on the keyboard. You would have to move your hand up to the navigator next to the screen...this could be a bit awkward. Let-handers could have even more of a problem as it is on the right side.
3. When using this as a phone, there is no "quick" numeric keypad available to dial from. Either you open it up and scroll through, or you mess around on the screen if it has soft-keys, and that is terrible to use as there is no tactile feedback and you have a chance to screw up your screen. Same with tapping on the numbers with a stylus. I would feel uncomfortable doing that. Furthermore, that tye of dialing becomes a two-handed operation--HTC has to figure out how to let users dial with one hand, on a keypad that gives good tactile feedback and is available without having to open the unit.
I had an O2 XDA II and I returned it for the above reasons. This Universal model seems to have enough features to make it worh the sacrifices, but I hope HTC can fix even these issues and make it perfect. |
