I think this concept and trend of VoIP over WLAN is more important and interesting than the Skype product itself. Skype is just one application and actually a very closed system operated by one company. They have opened some APIs for developers and partners, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still a propietary solution of one small company with limited marketing power.
I guess when some software company will partner with Cisco or some other big telecom company experienced with VoIP, we will see changes that will shock the whole industry.
Some hardware manufacturers and operators will try to fight back, but will eventually lose. Motorola's CEO Ed Zander said to journalists in Cannes (3GSM) that you can't stop the trend of Skype and alikes anymore, but you can try to make business with them.
I don't believe we will see totally free phone calls, but meaning of distance will change. In IP networks it's about the same whether your friend is located in the house next street or on other side of globe. |
