It is text only version - doesn't support voice yet - it's only for instant messaging (IM) but anyway this is big breakthrough and since (yet) most MS smartphones doesn't have Wi-Fi anyway, the lack of voice is n...

Another wonderful corruption of the "whole truth":

Quote:
Conclusions: there is reason to rejoice - the little brother of Pocket PC - Windows Mobile smartphone - is getting Skype! No Symbian phones have Skype yet, but all Windows Mobile phones have. Skype is a revolutionary new technology to deliver voice over IP (VoIP) + instant messaging...

So we should rejoice that we can now have Skype and Symbian can't, even though it doesn't support voice, and can only realistically be used if you have a BT connection to a PC (meaning that you are at, or very near, your PC... and therefore most likely another phone)

1.

Quote:
Q: Why not voice?
A: CPU power and network connectivity of currently available phones is not sufficient to enable Skype voice calls

Not true, 200Mhz TI processor of modern HTC smartphones ( I-MATE SP3i,etc,etc) is enough for VoIP. Your code is not optimised enough.

2.

Q: Why such big network traffic consuption?
A: Skype is built on peer-to-peer platform and by nature it requires more communication with other peers than simple server-based messaging. We are working to lower network usage in future versions.

Not correct. Your product is based on NON-EFFICIENT AUDIO CODEC.
bandwidth comsumption could be reduced by factor of 6, down to 6kbps without noticable voice quality reduction. full-duplex.

3. is there technology out there to showcase such an improvements?

Yes, product based on this technology is going to be launched during CeBIT 2005 in Sydney, on the 26 of May 2005, AIIA Software Showcase, stand 35.
SecureGSM.

I agree. I admit that I have never used Skype, but if it cannot yet support voice on Windows Mobile Smartphone what is it good for? There is no point in using it for instant messaging because it's a bandwidth hog and there are plenty of other more "considerate" IM clients available (e.g. MSN Messenger).

Am I missing something??

Yes, you are. 2 things:

1) in USA there is flat rate GPRS and CDMA and EDGE - all for tiny amount of money monthly - and users don't have to worry about traffic at all.

2) this version is just a preface, phase 1, introduction, before MS Smartphones with built-in Wi-Fi will be released. And with Wi-Fi Skype works perfectly. I know it - I use it in my Pocket PC phone and Pocket PC PDA.

Is Skype even worth messing with if you're making domestic calls? Voice plans are so cheap these days...

if you have good/fast Internet connection then voice quality is better in skype than in regular phone lines
and besides it with skype you use Voice over IP and with some tricks you an record phone calls directly to your computer, etc etc and Skype has also text messaging ...

generally it alll depends on what you need - it is not just about money but about additional functionalities...

SecureGsm has released their trial software for Pocket Pc which has the same voice capability as their full version without the encryption. This software is claimed to handle voip over low bandwith and 200 mhz processors.

Has anyone tried this software and does it handle voip calls well? A smartphone version is due to come out soon. Will be curious to try it over gprs and 200 mhz processor (i.e. HTC Feeler/Typhoon) smartphones for fulll duplex conversations Smile

Please let us know if you've tested out the SecureGsm software! Thanks.

Is there already more news. I think it would be great if you can use your internet connection at home. The if you are at home you can voip of your own internet connection using your bluetooth connection to the internet. Then you can use one phone everywhere. Does not necessarily require WIFI to work I think
