I'm glad to see they went with the more interesting "Windows Mobile 5" name over "Windows Mobile 2005". Of course, they didn't have much of a choice from a marketing standpoint since the year is half over.

It looks like WM5 is going to be Bluetooth 1.2 compliant. Not sure exactly what advantages that offers over 1.1 though. Incidentally, the mobile messengers beginning with hw6510 are bluetooth 1.2 compliant - nice.

I haven't seen any other website offer unique WM5 info. from MEDC '05 yet. Thanks for the early scoop...

to develop software for Windows Mobile 5, developers will have to install "Windows Mobile 5 SDK" that is an add-on to Visual Studio 2005. Without Visual Studio 2005 it will not be possible to develop applications for Windows Mobile 5.

Interesting step backward while every other platform is opening their SDK or integrating the gcc toolchain ...

From Microsoft's POV, this is a step forward.

Right now, you can develop for every other Microsoft platform from VS.net yet to develop for Windows Mobile you need to download a stand alone app.

The other point is that the potential userbase of visual studio is considerably larger than a stand alone tool therefore increasing the odds of better apps being developed for the platform which in turn increases the likelihood of consumer uptake.

I'd say binding a tool and a platform is a bit strange in 2005 (and even more strange in the GSM world), but we'll see Wink anyway if this brings a better C++ compiler to Windows Mobile I won't complain

The only thing that is going to irk a lot of end users is the "signing of applications to access privileged APIs or to run programs will still be available as a feature of Windows Mobile 5 - and it is also up to cellular network operators what level of locking they will use in Windows Mobile 5."

I believe it's more of a lockdown to diminish a wireless carrier's potential "revenue leak," much like Verizon Wireless' utilization of BREW over Java ($7.49 for each game, or a $2.99 monthly subscription? Give me a break!), rather than attempting to prevent the possibility of viruses or hack attempts on your mobile device. I have the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone and immediately had to have it application-unlocked in order to run the applications and games I wanted to.
