Distributors and operators want you to buy new phones with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of upgrading your old phones to Windows Mobile 5.0!
Interestingly ROM images with Windows Mobile 5.0 exist for HTC Typhoon (Or...

| This is purely speculative on your part and not based on any factual information. It is down to each individual operator/OEM as to whether to release an OS upgrade in the same way as it is with ROM upgrades for the current OS. I wouldnt say this is a reason not to get a new device though. |

This is no surprise.
Take a look at most phone manufacturers. They don't want to sell upgrades for existing devices, they want to sell new devices every 6 months. |

This seems to be true of Orange, not sure about other makers.
I don't see what difference it makes if there is a 5.0 ROM for an existing phone or only for a new model. I tend to upgrade a phone to get better hardware and software. The camera in many current models is only VGA.
Anyway, I paid for my iMate completely so it's in my interests to make it last. |

This is not speculative. I have received unofficial information from several sources that no current (i.e. powered by Windows Mobile 2003) Windows Mobile phone will have upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 .
The only chance is Audiovox SMT 5600 at Cingular however it will not be as ROM upgrade but as new phones (new ones, later on, will come with Windows Mobile 5.0 according to the rumor).
Yes, this is a reason not to buy new devices now and wait for Windows Mobile 5.0 - because Windows Mobile 5.0 has some fantastic features with new APIs and new SQL Mobile that simply means that new applications that use these fantastic features will not run in old Windows Mobile.
I repeat: don't buy Windows Mobile phone if it is not officially upgreadeable to Windows Mobile 5.0 or if it doesn't have installed Windows Mobile 5.0 in the ROM. Officially: press release or some official information on the website of operator or the website of brand owner (like Qtek). Don't believe what personell in the shop on the street says however.
Update: User "Suwat" from Thailand has been unbanned (he is no longer banned), but I have removed his post below because it contained slur. Just for the record: msmobiles.com is strongly pro-Microsoft however msmobiles.com values interests of end users of Windows Mobile devices more than interests of Microsoft. Also: nobody else gives you the whole story - only msmobiles.com . For some less informed people it may look like being anti-Microsoft but it is nonsense - msmobiles.com is strongly pro-Microsoft. Suwat: please restrict yourself from posting slur. |

How can you say this when just yesterday you said that Windows Mobile 5 is deficient? Which one is it?

Deficient = not good enough yet, but still very very good! That's why I say so!
By the way: as a further confirmation that no Windows Mobile phones will get upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 click here, where you can find official confirmation from Sierra Wireless (Voq) and from i-mate (JAM). |

| Also, you keep incorrectly stating that SQL mobile is included with WM 5.0 - it isn't. WM5 allows for it to be optionally installed on RAM or ROM along with the OS but this is down to individual OEMs and Operators as to whether they supply it. |

Last year Microsoft employees in certain conference were claiming that SQL Mobile will be included in ROM. Well, they didn't say "always" but clearly you are right. Sorry for that. |

Come to think of it, HP annouced a WM 5.0 upgrade for all it's current Pocket PC's and not it's Phone Eds (the 6300 and the upcoming 6500). |

Many companies won't supply upgrades as they have to support the product, it makes the life of the support department a bit harder. Two different OS releases, multiple versions of both and different hardware revisions.
Not to mention the developer resources. |

During my first reading, my mind said sounds really preposterous! But when I have a careful consideration. This ain't any problem if we views the Windows Mobile 5.0 device as a phone. It it not a darn computer which I am using right here! Thus, if want to have a Windows Mobile phones with Windows Mobile 5.0. Just buy a new phone! And begins the nice experiences with Windows Mobile features.
Ain't most of the handphone users changing their phones so often!?!
Well, for myself. I am just a decent handphone user, though. _________________ : ) xox (",)
