Not all operators require special USIM cards. For example here in Finland there are currently two commercial UMTS networks and both operators support SIM and USIM cards. Our third UMTS operator is a so called "virtual operator" (using these two networks) and they also accept normal SIM cards.
I don't know if there are specific phones that require a USIM card, but definitely this is not something required by the UMTS standard.

I think it is question of a phone, not question of operator... |

It is only my opinion. If this phone requires a new USIM card and will not operate with the normal SIM card why would the operator not be able to issue new USIM cards to its customers with the old and original numbers. The operator can have an arrangement to replace your regular SIM card with the USIM and then discard the old SIM while keeping your original telephone number in place.
Again as I said I am not an expert and this is only what I think the oeprator will do. Otherwise the comments are correct that if a new number is to be issued there has to be a very very good reason for someone to opt for the Universal Pro.

| In my opinion it's an operator choice (or a prototype choice) in the tested model i.e. the phone was locked to a 3G subscription. It'd be just weird to design a 3G only phone ... |

| This is the first GSM/UMTS phone I've heard of that won't accept SIM cards. Maybe you'll be able to with the final version? |

It is very strange to hear this specially when you have a look to the screen picture. It seems to be a smartphone screen and not PPC screen.
I think this device will be late on the market and this is the reason that they try with this mehod to find a way to delay their delivery. |

Well, we all know that T Mobile are just playing catch up with the O2 / Orange version. (which Ive also seen running).
O2 have historically been first to market with the HTC lines, Orange now have good groundwork and are directly competing for the corporation market
The thing is all the main operators in the UK are basically at the same state of development with the HTC universal. There are only so many of these devices actually in the UK.
1 Month ago it was unstable (windows mobile 2005), its getting better now.
They will all prolly release on or around the same date, but (unwisely) IMO T Mobile have set expectations that they are in some way infront of the others when its just false marketing leading to unrealistic expectations.

Jumping the gun but not actually having the products is below par IMO. |

I know I probably show up as a newbie on here but I just registered so be nice! ;-P
Anyway.. I have recently purchased a 3G phone from the UK (motorola A925). I live in Germany and I used my normal German SIM card and the phone worked fine for me. I have also since then used my same card in 2 different A1000 phones and I have a MDA pro on order that I will pick up on Tuesday from T-mobile Germany. The only thing that I did notice is that if one wants to use the 3G funtionality one must first turn on the UMTS service. For me this was accomplished through my provider on thier web page. I had to actually register for UMTS before I was able to make video calls and such. So as far as I can see the 3G phone (which by the way, until now have all been phones that I purchased privately that were previously on the "3" network) were able to use regular sim cards they just wouldn't do 3G until the UMTS service was activated. The other thing that I noticed was for my particular phones the "3" network services were pre-programed so I needed to add my D2 carrier network settings in order to ... surf the intertnet/ send email. I believe that if the phone is truely "unlocked" when purchased then it should work with all carriers (eplus germany being an exception because most of the time eplus cards only work with eplus phones) As far as doing this in the US... who knows for sure. For some strange reason the US seems to be at the end of the power curve when it comes to mobile communication (or any communication for that matter)... granted I am a US Citizen.. lol Hope this helps with the discusion. Regards to all and happy 3G'ing.
