You may like to tell people that this app is part of the WM 5.0 Smartphone SDK (which has been available for some time) so if people want the source code its in there. _________________ My views are my own and are in no way connected to any site i may be associated with |

| WM05 phones do not yet exist. HP's hw6700 will supposedly be released in November with it, and the HTC Universal is due in September I think. However, the HTC Universal will not have GPS. |

How exactly is it supposed to do that? You'd have to be pretty lucky/unlucky to loose both your gps device AND your phone and then for them to stay together AND connected long enough for your phone to be able to send you the co-ordinates. _________________ My views are my own and are in no way connected to any site i may be associated with |

Why do you call assisted-GPS crappy? AGPS is an enhancement to conventional GPS in that it compensates for conventional GPS's two shortcomings (see below):
1. There is no indoor coverage and performance is poor when the sky is even partially obscured.
2. The time is slow to fix the original position unless the device is constantly tracking satellites.
To solve the inherent restrictions of conventional GPS, assisted GPS was proposed (T1P1.5 standards for E911). Assisted GPS is based upon providing GPS satellite information to the handset via a cellular network resulting in vast improvements in the following:
1. Time to First Fix
2. Battery Life
3. Sensitivity
4. Cost |

That's what I thought - which makes the opening line of this article seem pretty . . . well . . . pointless. |

You keep saying we shouldn't buy phones without Windows Mobile 5 yet you fail to provide a good reason other than the fact it's the next version of Windows Mobile and that most phones won't have an upgrade path.
Fact is, 2003SE is stable, runs 99.99% of current smartphone apps, has the widest userbase of Windows Smartphone and available handsets.
From looking at the Microsoft promotional material most of the changes to WM5 are under the hood. Support for WIFI, hard disk storage, persistent storage (which Smartphone has already but PPC didn't).
There's a large enough API in there already to do searches etc, you just need access to the filesystem which any OS worth its salt will do.
There are those who will rush in and run Longhorn even though it will have driver problems, app compatibility problems. I'd sooner hold back and wait until those are ironed out. Just like I'd prefer to wait a while so WM5 is more stable and supported. |
