Nokia did it once and now Nokia is preparing to do it again. In past Nokia Communicator phones were based on GEOS operating system. Then, without releasing commercial phones with it, Nokia ported Palm OS and tested ...

Linux has an advantage, large amount of pre-written software available, the kernel already has embedded functionality. Not to mention familiar APIs.

The trouble with Symbian is the number of different interfaces. While this allows product designers to tailor the OS to the hardware it also means limited availablility of major applications like Tomtom for Symbian phones. The P910 is an ideal phone for Tomtom but it uses a different UI to Nokia and therefore isn't supported. This fragmentation will be the undoing of the platform.

I strongly disagree. Linux has no company behind it ensuring things like security or interoperability - only distributors selling hwat they got for free. That's as if you buy a house and rely on the neighbours that nobody breaks in.
