Nice phones!

But I still miss UMTS support.... I don't care about videotelephony, it's the higher speed I wan't. I used to think like that and choose builtin WiFi over 3G/UMTS, but when I retire my magician it will (hopefully) be replaced by a phone with UMTS and built-in WiFi. I can't se myself using a GSM-only phone by the mid/end of 2006 (upgrading my phone once a year and the successor to my magician will be phased out at the end of 2006 Wink)

Does anyone know when similar phones will reach USA (Cingular or T-Mobile)?

hiya Owen, old pal! Long time not seen!

No, you are wrong, notice this sentence in Finnish:

Quote:
Lisäksi 8310 sisältää ensimmäistä kertaa näin pienessä
laitteessa sisäänrakennetun Wi-Fi-sirun WLAN-käyttöä varten.

... which my pal from Finland translated into: "apart from that, 8310 for the first time in such a small device, has built-in Wi-Fi module, that makes it possible to access WLAN service".

Yes, a version for USA will be available both through operators and distributors. Please notice that these phones are quad-band and EDGE that is more popular in USA than in Europe.

mobile review says these will be tri-band instead of quad-band. Which is right? Seeing EDGE makes me think it is quad.

Yes both are really nice phones and yes, I also can only agree with the complaint that none of them is already offering UMTS.

I also own a Nokia 6680, in my eyes definitely the best Symbian phone at the moment (it's small, has a very smart design, good performance, tremendous UMTS speed, good camera and an unbelievably good battery time - even when using it for heavy UMTS downloading). I wished there were a comparable MS Smartphone already out in the market Sad

However internet surfing with it (I mean with the onboard software) is poor. Surprisingly I found that not even the Opera Browser (Symbian version) performs faintly as well as the Opera microbrowser for MS Smartphone. No idea why this is so. (Please now don't post cynical statements that it's just because it's Nokia. This is no technical explanation and you don't have to convince me of any product.)

Also Bluetooth works on the 6680 without a flaw and I am really furious about the junk BT stack HTC has built into the Qtek 8080. It's hardly usable for transferring files, using it as a GPRS modem for a PC has never been possible. (Even the very first BT phone, the Nokia 6310, worked flawlessly...)

Does anybody know if HTC has "improved" BT connectivity in their successor models following the Qtek 8080 ?

In case the 83x0 models will again have an unusable BT stack I would post that in all Smartphone forums in order to cope with my anger !

I was playing with Qtek8300 for 3 days, and it's great device. Bluetooth must be improved because it took me seconds to ActiveSync over BT. But I don't have other BT devices to test with this Smartphone.
WiFi is great and works fast, BUT there is one small thing: you can't browse local network from the phone. Until someone writes an application to do that, of course.
Anyway, the screen is so great. I thought my Mio8390 has the greatest screen ever and I was so wrong. Qtek8300 screen shows better colors than my notebook, simply amazing (I did browse some photos on it to compare).
