WM2003SE is a great OS, and if you're not a developer, WM5 doesn't add much at all. Do you know what WM5 has that's useful for END-USERS?
Do you know something about its price? Because if it will cost half the price of the new HTC (which is surely great, I'm not telling the contrary) I would be extremely interested in buying one. |

Price will be more than HTC Magician - P50 is (according to BenQ) a higher class premium device so it will not be cheap.
Regarding WM5: there will be several new programs for WM5 that use fantastic new APIs of WM5, that of course will not work for WM2003SE. It is really pointless to buy non-WM5 device these days.. |

Well if you don't have a phone now then you can get a 2003SE device now and get some use out of it or you can buy a dumb phone for a bit and then get a PDA phone when WM5 comes out.
But anyway, the new APIs mean nothing to most users. It's all user mode code, a nice library that makes programming things easier. You can write code yourself to replicate this.
The main additions to WM5 are support for hard disks, wifi (for smartphones) and faster GPRS style connections.
Where's 3G?
What you really should be saying is don't upgrade yet if you have a 2003SE device already. If you don't then there's no real problem, people still buy VCRs and DVD players even though HD-DVD and other better stuff is nearly here. |

Unless you actually wanted to buy a new device TODAY instead of waiting for someone to actually start selling one with WM5 someday.
I was going to wait until the HTC Universal or Wizard came avilable, but then my TG50 died. So I decided I could skip another (incremental) upgrade from MS and buy a VZ6600 with WM2003. |

| persistant storage means your device wont go through a hard reset if you battery dies and the battery wont keep draining if you turn the unit off. big plus for 5.0 imo. |

Isn't is funny how some people are quick to slag off a product they know nothing about?
If you had bothered to look at any of the WM5 reviews around, you'd know that it addresses the two major user criticisms of WM 2003 Phone Edition, i.e.
1. As guttrhead says, all user data kept in non volatile storage (Flash or hard disk) so you don't lose everything when your battery dies. Dynamic RAM is only used to execute programs, just like on your PC.
2. Big improvements to the user interface, e.g.
Context sensitive menus at the bottom of the screen, linked to two extra hardware buttons (like in Smartphone Edition), and improved phone / OS integration all round, giving better one-handed usability and a much reduced need for the stylus.
Both of these improvements require hardware changes to be fully supported, which is why (apart from short product life) most current devices won't have WM5 upgrades made available. |
