Latest Mobile Windows News: Socket Communications launches mini SDIO Wi-Fi card August 02, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] The new card is smaller but clearly is still protruding (sticking out) because it is needed to have some antenna space for reception:
Unfortunately no drivers for MS Smartphone are available for this card - just for Pocket PC - but since now most smartphones anyway have mini-SD slot not full size SD slot, it is not a problem. The de facto market leaders in Wi-Fi cards for Windows Mobile are SanDisk and Socket Communications so it is good to learn that one of them is launching mini Wi-Fi card! Please note: that only Windows Mobile phones and PDAs offer ability to be extended with Wi-Fi cards - in Symbian if given device doesn't have Wi-Fi on board then it is not attachable - never ever. Spectec releases mini-SD WLAN / Wi-Fi card June 27, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] It is not clear yet, whether this card works also with MS Smartphone or only with Pocket PC, but if you are a major distributor you can contact Spectec and order it for your shop. Having a Wi-Fi card in mini-SD format means that users of Pocket PC devices for example will be able to insert it into device and have no part, that is protruding, but since nowadays Windows Mobile devices really need also memory cards to function properly in many applications, it means that lack of built-in memory in this Wi-Fi card could be problematic...

... has won Best Choice Award of Computex 2005 - a big trade show that takes place this week in Taipei, capital of Taiwan. Arrogant Microsoft knows better and removes synchronization over Wi-Fi possibility in ActiveSync 4.0 and Windows Mobile 5.0 - more information available May 23, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] Competition is adding features in new versions of mobile platforms. Microsoft is removing some features. We have mentioned it already previously, that no longer ActiveSync over Wi-Fi will be possible in Windows Mobile 5.0, and now there is some addtional background information available about this serious mistake of Microsoft with regard to Wi-Fi synchronization: Hitchhiker - new free Wi-fi utility for Pocket PC released May 09, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] Hitchhiker is a speedy freespot (free Wi-Fi hotspot) tracer. This program shouldn't be confused with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie or book, but concept is similar: to hitch-hike to the Internet with help of freely accessible Wi-Fi access points... Wi-Fi Companion program for Pocket PC now available for sale May 03, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] If you have Pocket PC PDA or Pocket PC phone with built-in Wi-Fi then either it uses Microsoft's original Wi-Fi software or it has additional drivers and utilities from a company that delivers the Wi-Fi circuitry for given Pocket PC. Clearly Socket Communication is not selling enough SDIO Wi-Fi cards (after all now more and more Pocket PCs have built-in Wi-Fi and thus no need for Wi-Fi cards), so they decided to sell their Wi-Fi software separately from SDIO Wi-Fi cards! ProximityMail 1.44 now compatible with Widcomm 1.5 Bluetooth Stack March 09, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] While all Microsoft Smartphone devices use one and the same Bluetooth stack - Microsoft native Bletooth stack - the users of Pocket PC phones have more choice and can buy them either with Widcomm Bluetooth stack or with Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Unfortunately Mirosoft Bluetooth stack contains very small number of Bluetooth profiles (it doesn't even support PAN) and we recommend to everybody to prefer Widcomm Bluetooth stack... but in some cases of course Microsoft Bluetooth stack is enough for many users... Software review: software and drivers from Socket Communications for SDIO Wi-Fi / WLAN - version 2 March 06, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] Socket Communications, a company specialized in making hardware and software for mobile devices, lately has released new major version of their SDIO Wi-Fi drivers and software. In this detailed review we present many screen shots and descriptions of this software.
While many new top-notch Pocket PC phones already have built-in Wi-Fi, many low-end or small or cheap Pocket PC phones simply don't have built-in Wi-Fi. Should lack of Wi-Fi put you off and discourage you from buying a Pocket PC phone? We don't think so. In this story, the message that we would like to convey to you, a crystal clear message, is: whether given Pocket PC phone has built-in Wi-Fi or not, you can always add Wi-Fi through SDIO Wi-Fi card. Symbian powered cell phones do not have this possibility. Of course you can use your notebook powered by Mac OS, Linux or Windows to use this service, but if you really want it in mobile way, then only a Pocket PC PDA or phone with (built-in or attachable) Wi-Fi makes it possible:

... known also as Bluetooth LAN access point, available nowadays for as little as 50 USD (or less), you can forget about Wi-Fi and browse wirelessly for free with your Pocket PC phone! Over Bluetooth! Socket Communications releases new version of Pocket PC drivers for SDIO Wi-Fi cards - with major Wi-Fi improvements February 26, 2005; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] Nowadays several brilliant Pocket PC phones (like i-mate JAM or T-Mobile MDA Compact) are equipped with Bluetooth and allow for use of cheap Blueooth LAN access points, however if you are outdoors Wi-Fi is not only better but sometimes it is the only way to access Internet without the use of cellular networks! In such cases - if you have Pocket PC phone with Bluetooth but without Wi-Fi - not everything is lost: you can buy one of many SDIO Wi-Fi cards and get immediate access to Internet through hot spots...
Cell phones with Wi-Fi coming before end of this year from BenQ, MITAC, ... September 23, 2004; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] ... and since both these companies either want to produce (BenQ) also Windows Mobile phones or are producing only Windows Mobile phones, it means that we will observe much more Windows Mobile phones (both Pocket PC phones and Microsoft Smartphones) with built-in Wi-Fi! "Using the phone, Web surfers will be able to be connected to the Internet through their mobile operator's GPRS services on the run. Interestingly newly established Wireless LAN Exchange Association (WLANEA) will ... Windows XP Service Pack 2 brings native support for Bluetooth - another reason not to buy Bluetooth-less devices August 13, 2004; [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] Yes, believe it or not but it's true! Now for many Bluetooth USB dongles no drivers are required (we used D-Link Bluetooth USB dongle but almost any that formerly worked on WIDCOMM drivers should work) to use Bluetooth in your good old PC:
